Need advice on perineal examinations.

  1. Could some of you experienced nurses give me some advice on the best postioning, etc. for examinations to check on lacerations and episiotomies? I am having a difficut time trying to see if there is hematomas or anything else wrong....any pointers, advice, would be appreciated.

Are these ladies in postpartum beds? If so, sometimes you can invert a bedpan and have them put their bottom on that. Be sure to get the bed way up so you're not bending over.
If they are in labor beds, lower the feet all the way and have them scoot down to the end of the head part.
    Get a flashlight.
    Good luck.

I often have women lay on their sides and check them from behind. This usually works well.

Having the pt. lay on her side usually works best and gives the most exposure of the perineum. But, sometimes just because you can't see a hematoma, etc., doesn't mean there may not be one inside the vagina.

    Good Luck
