Interview Questions?

Hello everyone!

I'm sorry if this is a repetitive question, but most of the threads I've found have been old. I am a soon to be graduated nurse(May!!!) and have an interview for a large hospital in Vegas as a maternal child nurse(I applied for all units, so I'm not sure which exactly). This is my goal for my career, and I want to give myself the best possible chance of getting this position!

I was wondering if there were any tips, tricks, advice, or frequent questions that are asked? Google was not my friend to help with this!

I recently interviewed for a Labor and Delivery position and am a new graduate (congratulations on your upcoming graduation!). I took NRP and Introduction to FHM before applying to the position and had also done an externship in L/D the summer before I graduated. I was completely anticipating scenario based questions specific to this specialty, and/or questions to demonstrate my knowledge on the certification courses I had recently completed. However, my questions had way more to do with my personality than anything else.

My recommendation to you would be to really explore the reasons WHY you want to get in to this specialty. Tie in parts of your personality that will add to the patient experience in this setting. As most people will recommend, look up the mission statement of the hospital and see how it aligns with your own practice or what qualities you have that can make that mission possible for the unit.

I just had an interview for a Maternal Child Health position and like honesttogoodness_RN said, most of the questions they asked me were not clinical. They were more geared towards finding out my personality and how I handle things in general (unexpected events and conflict with a coworker). I included in my answers how this would benefit me in that position, and of course why I was passionate about Maternal Child Health. Good luck to you! Keep us posted!!

I second (or third really) the previous posters. Your interview will be (or should be) minimal clinical type questions and more about what you can bring to the unit. Relate your passions to the mission and goals of the unit and the organization. How can your experiences in an out of nursing enable the unit and its team to take the best care of the patients. I've interviewed so many people especially new grads and I have no expectation that you could answer my specific clinical questions because that isn't relevant to my hiring process. I can train you to be a fantastic maternal-child nurse if you are the right person for the job and are capable of learning what you need to learn (note that this is different from being able to learn in general). Chances are they will make some mention of "cultural fit" which is absolute crap, focus on what you can contribute to the culture instead.

Just wanted to update that I got a contingent job offer before I even left! I'll be starting as a postpartum nurse doing couplet care as soon as I have a testing date(when I get my unofficial results). :)
