Oakland Community College Students 2017

Hello, I am looking to start the program in Fall of 2017! I'm looking to meet students and take this journey together and share our experience

This is so sad I'm playing imaginary boat and shark play with my 3 yr old son in hopes of tiring him out and to pass the time till I go to bed. Just so tommorow can hurry up and come. I feel like a child lol

Hey Everyone! Just found this thread. I applied for the nursing program for Fall/Spring 2017! I am sooo nervous for the mail tomorrow!

I called them on Monday too! They probably got so many calls. Lol.

Hello@Aprilee1993

Thank you @studentmom10! I am so excited/scared for tomorrow! I'm cheering y'all on! I hope we all get in. So from what I have read from this post, we get to choose when we get to start the program? I didn't know that. I want fall start! And hopefully I can take pharmacology in summer. My friend did the EMS program and said Pharm was hell on earth. :yuck:

Hi @Aprilee1993 and @Hailee22, good luck to you both!

As far as being able to choose semester start date, they talk about it in the 2016 thread here: https://allnurses.com/online-nursing-schools/oakland-community-college-1035985.html

I got accepted last year and was not ready for nursing school. It's true we did receive 3 letters I believe and one letter was for us to indicate the semester we wanted to begin- basically they filled up the winter seats first. Everyone who chose the winter start date started in the winter, but, a few people (who indicated that they wanted to start fall) were chosen at random to attend the winter start date too. Not sure if that's the case for this year though. They may be doing things differently this year, not sure. It is rumored on this board that OCC may have chosen less than 216 people to attend classes- although we don't know if that's true or not. I just hope we all get in!!

Oh my gosh! Why would they take even less? When I talked to the advisor, he said that in 2016 they took all of the applicants because not enough people had applied. I really hope that we all her in! I'm sick honestly just thinking about it. So after we choose what semester we want to start, any idea how long it is before we find out which one we will be in? I mean I guess I'm fine with either but I would really prefer the fall semester because I want it to be done and over with. Lol.

I know me too. I just want to get through school and become a nurse already. I've worked in the medical field on and off for 6-7 long years- I've been a caregiver, a CNA, and have done in home care in public and private sectors. I've administered meds already and have done all of the basic CNA stuff, so I'm pretty comfortable with the practical application and I'm actually really excited to learn the theory aspect. I just bought an awesome new planner too! I'm really excited to start using it.

Honestly, I have no clue why they would do that unless (maybe) there were unqualified applicants or something. I don't even know if there is any truth in that rumor though tbh.

I'm not sure but reading the 2016 board it seemed to go pretty quickly once the letters rolled in :nurse::). Maybe 1-3 weeks is my best guess. The secretary at highland lakes said that orientation (the 4 hour orientation meeting) is in April- I'm not sure if the orientation is for the entire class or just for fall students.

I've been in the healthcare field a for about 6 years as well. I also am a waitress and bartender so that gives me more flexibility with school. What start date are you trying to do? And also, do you know the exact date is for the April meeting? I'm going to be out of town for a week so I'm really scared I'll miss it. I have a nonrefundable flight booked! I actually just looked into rescheduling it and it would cost around $300 if I had too.

I just read alllll of the nursing threads from the 2016 class and it was so informative! Made me a little less nervous. I know the program will be hard, but I feel like it'll be more time consuming than anything.

If anyone is interested in a Facebook group, let me know! I'm totally down to do that. I can even create it if need be. í ¾í´—

Good Morning All!

Hopefully today is the day we all get our letters and we get accepted! I couldn't even sleep last night, I'm literally making myself sick! I think the FB page is a wonderful idea. @aprilee1993, Good luck to everyone today.

I'm on pins and needles I getting ready to take my son to the doctor and I kno I will be thinking about it if it came!!! And yes I love the Facebook idea as well hope for the best for us all

That's so funny I used to waitress and tend bar too, until I had kids, now I'm stay at home mom.

I want to take Pharm during the summer and start classes in the fall! Hopefully OCC offers us a choice this year. I hear ya with the non refundable flight, I just finished paying off our vacation for Aug. and have to block off 10 days for St. Croix!! Try adding the flight insurance, if you need to change your flight. Not sure which airline you're going through but I think American Airlines will let you add flight insurance (for roughly $150) then you can make changes as necessary. I have no clue when in April- looking through 2016 post it seems like a lot of students got their packets (showing fall or winter selection and orientation date) the first week of April. Around that time they were working on getting the Pharm book, finger printing, background check, drug scree, and insurance; apparently the rate of insurance will be higher for anyone with a CNA license. Around that time they also started getting familiar with the Pharm txt and course material- Pharm started around May 9th for the 2016 thread; depending on the person it seems like the began finding out which Pharm class they got into from the second week in April up to the week before classes started. OOOk found it (pg 22 of the 2016 thread) 2016 had 2 orientation dates- for fall it was May 19 and for Winter it was Sept 19. Not sure what our dates will be but 2016 is a nice frame for reference.

Once I get in (knock on wood) I'll be interested in a FB group for our class, I'll have to make an acct. though!

What direction is everyone looking to go into once they become a nurse? My intention is to either work at the VA hospital in Ann Arbor in ED or at Mott in Ann Arbor in Pediatric Oncology or Neurology. Long-term goals, I want to become a nurse educator (MSN).

Only a few short hours (for some) until the mail person comes! Good luck to all!!! Keep us posted!
