NZ trained US citizen who wants to practice in CA

Published

Hi all!

I'm a native Californian and I'm currently living in New Zealand, where I'm working on my Bachelor of Nursing degree. I'm going to be applying for licensure in California once I've graduated here, but as I don't fulfill some of the BRN requirements (specifically I lack OB/Peds theory and clinical hours), I've been advised I can fulfill these requirements by attending classes at an accredited nursing program. Does anyone have an experience doing this? Can you recommend any nursing schools or programs, or give me any advice?

Cheers!

Have you had a look through the forum, this has been discussed several times and people have given links etc to look at. I will repost links if I can find anything. You can do the theory via distance learning and organize your own clinicals if you can find a place that agrees to oversee.

Hi ghillbert!

I have looked through the forum: after browsing back about 5 pages worth of threads it looked like most of the people asking were citizens of countries other than the US, and so most of the answers were about things like obtaining SS#s or green cards, none of which apply to me. If you find any threads that name specific schools accredited by the CA-BRN, especially distance schools, yes please point me towards them!

I have a good relationship with a hospital in California, and I think they might be willing to supervise my clinical hours.

Cheers!

Do you know how much hours you are missing? How about working in paeds/obs for your new grad internship?

Sometimes unis offer post grad classes. Back in Sydney, I took up a few classes esp related to paeds in "The College of Nursing" , they offer distant learning also. Give them a call and maybe you can do that.

Hi Slehnhard,

Just curious how this worked out for you because I have a similar situation except I am looking forward three years. Looking to study at Massey in 2017 to get my BN and then hope to be able to work as an RN in California. I am an American citizen (with Kiwi partner). I realize that the NCLEX changes all the time but am having a hard time finding answers.

How did you find out what you were lacking and where did you study or get experience to make up for it? I have looked at the California Board of Nursing site and it looks like you have to go through a third party company that assesses your transcript, and since I am not studying yet, only have course descriptions to go by.

Was it very difficult to pass the NCLEX with a NZ education? Where did you get your BN?

I would be immensely grateful for any advice! Hope to hear from you.
