NYU Midwifery Question

Published

hello - was just accepted to nyu's accelerated nursing program and want to attend cnm program as well -- but just saw this posted on the webiste:

[color=#c11b17]announcement: new york university college of nursing will no longer be accepting applications for admission into its master's degree and advanced certificate programs in midwifery as it will be suspending its midwifery program for new students beginning in the fall of 2008. the midwifery program will continue for current students until the last cohort of currently enrolled students has graduated.

i am freaking out -- does anybody attend nyu midwifery program that can explain? i am starting in fall 2008 does that mean i am blocked out.

i kind of want to cry!

thank you!

sounds like you will be blocked out. this also happened with university of md's program. you should probably email the director of the programt to find out why they have suspended their program.

it's probably because of lack of interest. i don't think nyu is particurly known for their midwifery program.

i wouldn't panic. if you plan to stay in nyc, you still have two to three more options. columbia university, suny downstate and frontier (well known long distance program)

good luck!!!

I think Zahryia is right about the lack of interest. I applied for the program a few years back but I quit because there was only one other person in my peer group and I felt really lost in the program without much support.

I know it's not much fun to go through the whole process of application just to get shut off, but if it's any consolation the program is kind of weak for the reason I've mentioned.

I recommend SUNY downstate if you are going to stay in the area. From my observation, Columbia isn't exactly a hub of midwifery energy either. I am basing my opinion my previous research and talking with midwifery students at the school, so take it for what it is.

I'm so sorry - hope you get in another place.

Actually, I was just on the NYU Nursing page today and here is what it said:

Exciting New Announcement: New York University College of Nursing is NOW accepting applications for admission into its Master's degree and Advanced Certificate programs in Midwifery as of the spring of 2009 and fall of 2009. We look forward to reviewing your application and thank you for your interest in NYU College of Nursing for your graduate studies.

Dear moira5520:

It is true! NYU CON Midwifery is back w/a new director. I grad from NYU w/my BSN (originally enrolled at NYU for Dual Degree BSN-MSN Nurse Midwifery) but decided to persue my midwifery degree elsewhere when I hear that the old program director was leaving. I have meet with the new prgram director, a CM (non-nurse). I suggest you meet with her and see if your personality and learning styles mesh - alas mine did not and I am in the middle of applications right now.

Not to be a total Debbie-downer, but NYU is not the best at doling out the financial aid. After getting my BSN in 15 months I owe $85,000.....all loans loans loans. Many of the scholarships outlined by NYU CON are for traditional 4 year BSN students.

Hope this helps!

moira5520,

The midwifery program at NYU is indeed back, and I'm starting it in the fall. I personally found Julia Lange-Kessler, the new director of the program, to be extremely welcoming, informative, and kind. I feel the program is still going to be run along the same philosophies of Pat Burkhardt, the previous CNM director. Also, once you finish your BSN at NYU, many of the hospitals in the city, including NYU Medical Center, will pay for your master's degree while you work for them. Assuming you keep working until you're almost through the program, as I intend to do, that's a huge chunk of the expense taken care of. Just something to consider.

Yes, NYU Med. center will pay for a large portion of your graduate tuition. However, please know that if you plan for working in L&D, NYU does not have Midwives on staff and also just recently published a C-section rate of >45%. If you plan on working on another unit such as PP or MedSurg I guess it doesn't matter.

There are other NYC area hospitals that have similar tuition benefits w/Midwives on staff such as St.Lukes-Roosevelt and Mt.Sinai.

In response to LillyRoseRN - as an NYU graduate, I can definitively say that I was disappointed in how they handled my transition from Bachelor's to Master's - many of us were totally in the dark about Pat leaving, and realized our program was in upheaval when we tried to register for class. It is an aweful feeling to feel like a total number lost in a sea beaurocracy. I agree that Julia is welcoming, warm and a competent practitcioner, however I do not like her style of group learning. It is all personal preference.

Thank you for your input on NYU. I was going to look into it since the program has opened up again.

What is the annual tuition for the accelerated BSN program? $85k??

during my attendance it was roughly $34,000/year for fall and spring semesters and $10,000 in the summer. that was just tuition and fees. i attended 3 semesters (1 semester fro pre-reqs) and 1 summer session and i had to take out addt'l loans to pay my rent, etc. my total student loan debt is roughly 86,000. needless to say, the amt of debt is excruciating, but i did get an excellent nursing job before graduation - nyc loves nyu grads. but, i do think i will be attending a public university in the fall to complete my MSN.
