which nyc nursing school?

Published

I have a BSc. degree from Jamaica, but i want to change my area of study to nursing (RN). i went to Medgar Evers yesterday for admissions counselling and found out that the deadline for fall 2009 had passed. i wouldn't be able to get into college until spring 2010. She told me i'd have to do the prerequisites and then sit the NLN-PAX before i can apply to get into the programme. The problem however is that i would have to complete the pre-requisites b4 im allowe to sit the NLN which is only offered by Medgar b/w March & April. That means if i enter Medgar spring 2010 and sit the pre-reqs, i wouldn't be able to sit the NLN until spring 2011 because i cant sit it until i complete the pre-reqs. i really cannot wait that long...that is just ridiculous. does anyone know of another CUNY school that offers the NLN during the fall semester, or one that doesn't require NLN....

i really need to start my career. help:confused::confused::confused:

from what i've been reading in other posts, most cuny schools are not only competitive to get into but you to have the basic pre-reqs already completed (a&p 1, 2 and micro) to even apply. even the adn programs are set-up that way that's why typically most people wait 2-3 years before they're ever accepted to a cuny program.

you have to remember cuny schools are usually the least expensive route to getting a nursing degree and most are in the ny metro area so you have approx 400 applicants applying for 40-50 seats-so it's gonna be tough. they also go by your gpa which from i've read needs to be as close to 4.0 as possible.

an option for you to get your education career started may be looking into a private college (although more pricey) or considering going further north to one of the suny colleges. there are several located in upstate ny that do not have such strict criterias to be accepted. you can try this website: http://www.suny.edu/student/campuses_complete_list.cfm

i would call the admission office to the individual colleges and ask what they're looking for to be accepted to the nsg program. some ofthe colleges have the information listed on their website. hope it works out for you. good luck!

THANKS FOR THE INFO...I'LL DEFINITELY CHECK:typing

At the moment NYU will allow complete the pre-requisite, the summer before you start their school. So you can apply now for fall 2010. You can complete the pre-requisite in the fall or spring while you wait to get accepted.

Yale does not have a pre-requisite. They only require a Bach, GRE, letters of recommendation, a minimum of 3.0 GPA. The deadline is coming up soon for the fall 2010.

UPENN is another school that will allow you to complete the requirement while you apply.

I recommend visit their admission's website then talk to someone in admission.

happiness10466 is right about CUNY. You will be wasting so much time with CUNY waiting to get in. It is extremely competitive. SUNY downstate is the same BS.

Good Luck
