Do you think it’s acceptable for medical surgical nursing to be second semester of junior year for a 4 yr program? Or should it be earlier?

My program was structured:

Freshman year: prereqs and gen eds

Sophomore year, first semester: prereqs and gen eds

Sophomore year, second semester: coreqs (A&P 2) and fundamentals/assessment (took place on a med/surg floor)

Junior year, first semester: med/surg

Junior year, second semester: peds/OB

Senior year, first semester: community and psych

Senior year, second semester: critical care and practicum

They did direct admit into the nursing program, no having to apply after completing prereqs. I can see a delay if prereqs must be completed before starting clinical courses.

You seem to think it isn't. Care to expand on why?

Yes. That is how my program was structured with med-surg in the second semester. I thought it was good that they didn’t frontload heavy classes. Then again, we did have 4 classes first semester (fundamentals, community, pathopharmacology and ethics).

Yes.

My first semester of nursing school consisted of:

Intro to Professional Nursing (2 hours)

Pharmacology (3 hours)

Fundamentals + Clinical ( 3 hours + 2 hours)

You need to understand the basics before jumping into Med Surg the second semester.

I think that schools put a lot of thought into the way they structure their programs. I think that as a student it is often difficult to see the intentionality behind some of these decisions.

In short, yes I think it is acceptable.
