Nursing student intern in ICU

Specializes in ICU.

hi all,

i just started a student nurse position at md anderson cancer center in houston. i wanted to see if anyone had advice on what i can expect and what will make me a productive learner while on the unit. i will have a preceptor so that is going to be really helpful. i cannot give meds, but i want to know more about the ones used most often. i can help with adl's, vitals signs, foley's, cvc dressing changes, and other procedures that can be delegated to non-licensed personnel.

please share your experiences with me. any advice would be greatly appreciated. :) ketcia:)

The most important thing is always the patient. Treat each patient as you would want a family member treated. Look up the meds that are given, why, they are given what they exect the outcome to be, what the range of dosage is and what to do for an overdose. Observe the nurses and know which one you would most like to be like and the one you would least like to be like. This is a great learning opportunity, relax and make the most of it. Good luck and God bless.
