nursing student to be has ? about entrance exam

Published

Hello Everyone!

I am looking forward to attending UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing (Pittsburgh, PA) in Sept. 2008.

I will probably be taking the entrance exam which is the test format given by The Psychological Services Bureau, Inc RN entrance exam.

I have been studying like crazy for 6 months now and still feel am not prepared.

My questions are: 1. Does anyone have any suggestions on what may be on the exam? (IE: basic math, Algebra, biology)

2. Does anyone currently attend or plan on attending this school and what happens if you do not do well on a section of the exam? Can you retake that portion or do u have to take a course in that subject.

Sorry for all the questions. I have been out of school sooo long, I am very nervous. Any input with entrance exam help with be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I took it back in 2002 and it had several sections to it. Math, Science among others, what happens is if you fail one of the categories, they make you take just the one you failed, not the whole test.

However, when you re-test, they may charge you another testing fee.

if you fail a section(s), not they that i plan on it, but you never know. Will they give you a few weeks to retest or do you have to take a class and then they retest you?

How does that work? Thanks for the help!

If you fail a section, according to some of my classmates, you have to take a class and then they allow you to retake the exam.....only the part that you failed.

Do all places make you take some sort of entrance exam? And are these exams standard?

I just took the psb-rn exam at shadyside. It wasn't as bad as I thought. I have been out of school for approx 12 yrs. The math wasn't as hard as alot of the questions in the books that they suggest. Which I am no mathelete by any means:idea:. Verbal was all antonyms(which word doesn't belong). the reading comp was alittle tough just because we only had 30 minutes to read 4 passages and answer 40 questions:uhoh21:.

Science, which I've heard is the toughest, wasn't that bad. There were some tricky ones, but for the most part it was basic chem, bio, ap, and natural science.

I felt pretty good after it, however there were a few that I definetly guessed, and of course I keep going over in my head after the fact. All I can say is I did the best that I could and should find out in a week or so if my best was good enough.

When are you taking it? I wish you the best of luck and keep studying!

Thanks for the reply and help, but I took the test on 02/15...it wasn't what i thought it was going to be. I did my best and know i just have to hope for the best. I should be getting my results any day now. The wait is making me crazy.

What did you think of it? I studied almost everyday since Jan. and on weekends almost all day Sat and Sun. I felt that I knew more than what was on the test but some of the questions like the make up of a protein? :angryfire

also the verbal, and then a math question, making you switch gears made it interesting.

You still haven't got your scores? It has only been a few days and I am already going .

I don't quite understand the scoring...It states "To be considered for admission, all candidates must have a composite (total) percentile score of 320 with no single subject area lower than the 75th percentile." How do they get a percentile score of at least 320?

Were there alot of people taking the exam with you? There were like 5 or 6 people total with me.

I hope you find out soon!!

Sorry but are you planning, if accepted to go full time or part time?

I've been studying since last June and faithfully every night + weekends since November. I thought the reading, vocab and math weren't too bad, but the science was a bit out there. The books i had only covered 1/2 of what was on the test. I left with an ill feeling about the science section.

You're right about the voc and math it was hard to stay focused because you had to keep switching gears.

I did not understand the 320 total and the 75% thing either, if you do the math it doesn't add up.

I am going out of my mind waiting. I just hoped i passed because I don't think I have enough time to take a remidiation course and be able to retest for fall admission. I'll be very disappointed if I can't go this fall. I've been trying to do this for so long. This is the farthest I've came to actually doing it. Everytime I would consider doing it something came up that prevented me from acheiving my goal. I plan on going part time evening. What about you. When did u take ur test?

It is a percentile score as compared to the people who have taken the test. I'm sure that if you studied as hard as you say you did, you will do fine. I thought that the science was the hardest part; that being said, I still scored a 94 in it. It took two weeks for us to get our results. I am currently in my second semester of Shadyside's program, and it is a great school. Good luck!

I took it on the 22nd. Mommyjskns you sound like my mom, she has been a nurse for 30+ yrs and said the same thing!! Even some of her co-workers which some have gone to shadyside said, if I studied that much I should do fine. I'm just a little worried because I want to do this sooo bad for my family for myself and of course to help others.

My cousin went through the program and loved it. I just felt that some of the questions got the better of me. I tend to over think things.

Laura,

hi! I finally took the test. Boy u were right the science hard. I'm not feeling very confident about the science. And i really studied!! Maybe i didnt study long enough or as hard as I thought! But there's no going back. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed and saying prayers that I did well. I should be getting my results anyday now. (I HOPE)

By the way thanks for your help. It was/is much appreciated. Hopefully I will see you at Shadyside in the fall.

Cindy
