I am currently writing a paper on Faye Abdellah. I have been looking for information on her and how to write a nursing theory and keep comming up dry. I have only been able to find very minimal information on her. (3 or 4 sites) My report has to include a brief history, how she entered the field, and growth proscess. I would like to include more though. (that seems really basic) I also have to do a second section and write my own theory of what nursing should be. (my role and the patients role). I googled how to write a nursing theory and all It came up with was how to buy a nursing theory paper? :banghead: I def. don't want to do that. Does anyone know of any sites or anything that I can look at for information on Faye Abdellah and can anyone help with tips on how to go about writing my theory??

This is from a textbook I have by McEwen and Wills: Theoretical Basis for Nursing.

Abdellah earned her BSN, master's and doctorate from Columbia. She served as CNO and deputy US General at the US Public Service before retiring in 1993 with the rank of Rear Admiral. She is the Dean of the Graduate School of Nursing, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

She developed the patient-centered approach to nursing and is was developed inductively from her own practice. It is considered a human needs theory. the theory was created to assist with nursing education and is most applicable to the education of nurses.

The model defines 21 nursing problems, 20 steps to identifying client's problems and 20 nursing skills.

She categorized nursing problems based n the individual's needs and developed a typology of nursing treatment and nursing skills. She developed a list of characteristics that described what was distinctly nursing, differentiating the profession from other health professions.

Your best bet may be to go to a nursing library -- where they would have books on theories. Many theory textbooks have chapters on each of the major theorists. Does your school have a library? Is there a nursing school with a library nearby?

Thank you so much this helps me alot. That is already more information than I have found online.

I have been to the library at my university and I did get a little information there. There really wasn't alot though, about a paragraph in 3 diffrent books. They all basically said the same information. I have plans to go to the public library in the morning. I figured if anything I can find a book that she has written. Hopefully, I can get some information there. Thank you for your help!

I doubt you will find anything in a public library. They rarely have nursing textbooks. What you need are textbooks used to teach nursing classes. You are most likely to find those in a Health Sciences Library at a nursing school.

Does the textbook that you have for your class not offer any help? I assume she is discussed in there -- and that there is a list of references.

I assume you have done at least a CINAHL search. I just typed her name into CINAHL and brought up 4 articles, including an interview with her.

Well, there is not a text book for the class. It's a nursing prep class. I don't even know what a CINAHL search is but I will def. do that. I'm at a community college so there is not a Health Sciences library. I do have a fundamentals book that a friend gave me...but nothing. Thank you for all of your help. I did find a site this evening that gave me alot of information.

CINAHL - Cummulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literarature. It's one of the major (and largest, I think) index of professional nursing journals. Any nursing school or hospital library would have access to the CINAHL database and would have at least some of the professional nursing journals on hand. They may also be able to download some of the journals online. Such a library might also be able to order an article for you for a small fee if they didn't have easy access to one you thought was critical for your paper.
