IV needle gauge

  1. I sure could use some help. I have to write a care plan on one of the patients I had last week. I wrote down that she was receiving D5 NS with 40mcg KCL/L at 75cc/L and that she had received blood also during the stay.....but I forgot to write down the size needle the IV was....doggone it. I want to say that I read 20 gauge on the chart......could that be the accurate size?? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, it could have been a #20. Any idea what color the cathether was?

True, it could have been a #20, possibly a #18. Many nurses won't try to run blood through a #22 or smaller guage.

Thanks NurseguyFL, it was a #20, it seems to be the standard used
