nursing specialty involving case management/social services

I'm just wondering if anyone can provide direction on this. I have always saw myself as working in postpartum, antepartum, L&D, or eventually an office OB position. I am not opposed to other units. I am concerned about whether or not this line of work is going to fulfill my passion for helping people get the services they need. I know that I want to be practicing in a clinical environment, want to be very involved with providing health care but I am really concerned that I may not feel I'm doing enough. In my family/friend circle I have always enjoyed being the one to help people find the resources they need for any given problem. I really want to be doing that in my work. I know that nurses are patients advocates but how much of this is really done?

I am about to begin my last semester of reqs. and N/S next year. I know nursing is right for me but is there a specific environment or position I should be shooting for? Thank you for the advice.

AFAIK, the closest you would get within nursing to what you're describing (which is typically, usually, social work's "turf") is case management, as you noted in the title of your thread. Once you get a few years of solid clinical experience, you can move into that area, in OB or in any other specialty you enjoy.

Thank you! Do you know if I need additional course work for this or is being a nurse a few years enough? Is there anything I can do to speed this up? What setting would this position occur in and would I still be able to provide clinical care? I don't want clinical care to be replaced by the other.
