This is not a school assignment. I wish it was, but I am not yet a nursing student.
I have gained so much valuable insider knowledge just by reading everyone's posts and it has been fantastic!
That brings me to my two-part question that I hope you can respond to.
1. With so many possible nursing specialties, what would be your dream job?
2. What steps are you taking to get there?
Again, this is just for fun and to share information with each other. I look forward to reading the responses.

I don't know what my dream job is. I've only been a nurse for 2.5 years. Right now I'm working in the ER. Before nursing school I thought I wanted to do L&D but nursing school experiences changed that. Toward the end of nursing school I decided that I wanted to work in ICU. I started out as a new grad on a telemetry unit with the intent of switching to ICU after a year. That never happened. Now that I'm in the ER and do take care of critical patients, I've decided that I would probably prefer ICU to the ER. Still, I'm planning to stay for a couple more years and apply for my masters to become a nurse practitioner.

My dream job is the Newborn ICU.
I work as a tech in one currently and have a new grad job offer. I did that purposely to assure I'd start in my dream specialty.
I agree, this website is a treasure chest.

My dream job is the cardiovascular ICU. Right now I'm a nursing student working as a PCT (float pool) in the hospital, and I hope to get a new grad/residency position. Hoping to start out either in telemetry and get 1-2 years experience and switch to the CVICU, or start out in the ICU (preferred) and then transition to CVICU :)

I want to work as a floater!
I like the idea of not having a set unit every day. I think it would keep things exciting to constantly have new assignments on different units and with different employees. I also feel like this is a great way to keep different nursing skills sharp rather than get into the same ol' routine of same cares every day.
As an added bonus, from what I understand, float nurses generally make a little more than non-float nurses.
I would really like to stick to a type of ICU. Any kind. Pediatric ICU, Neonatal ICU, Cardiovascular ICU....anything. But it just depends on how I like different areas once I start nursing school clinicals.

Going into nursing school I wasn't sure what my "dream job" was. Then...my final semester of nursing school came and I still wasn't sure what I wanted to do.
Our final semester of school, we finally got to try out CCU and ER. I thought that I would prefer CCU nursing but wasn't sure. I had already ruled out L & D and knew I could handle Med-Surg if I had to. I did CCU clinicals and it was not what I thought it would be. THEN I got to go for my weekend in the ER and I found my calling! The ER is my niche and I excelled in clinicals, impressed my preceptor in the ED and the charge nurse so I got hired to work in the ER straight out of school and I'm still loving it!
Don't let anyone tell you you can't get that dream job. You can!!! Work hard, do your best, stand out in clinicals and you will succeed!

My dream job is in peds. To achieve that, I have been applying to the children's hospital in my area every chance I get. I have made connections with a nurse manager there and she allowed me to use her has a referral on the application. I am also applying to another hospital in the same system. I have been applying for their posted NICU jobs as they are expanding the NICU and it will be open in september. This way if I get hired in the NICU hospital, I can transfer to the children's hospital after a year.

I've always wanted to work in peds. I've worked with kids all my life before nursing school and I know it's where I want to be. Pretty much all my project and papers were related to kids and babies, I had plenty of work experience with kids, and then I took advantage of any volunteer experience through nursing school that had me working with kids. That helped me build up my resume.
As for post grad jobs, I've realized that I can either be in my ideal location or try to get into my specialty, but not both (unless you're very very lucky). So I have literally applied all over the U.S., to big children's hospitals and small community hospitals. Usually, new grads have better luck in smaller hospitals that need people, but you never know! I'm about 2 weeks until graduation and have a job offer in peds at a small hospital and an interview at my dream children's hospital! I say find your passion and go after it :)
