P.E.I. nurse shortage closes ER early - Yahoo! Canada News

"Health officials on Prince Edward Island say the emergency room at King's County Memorial Hospital in Montague will close at 6 p.m. AT Sunday, four hours earlier than normal.

The closure is due to a shortage of nurses this weekend at the 30-bed acute-care facility. "

The caveat here is that although there may be a shortage of nurses in PEI, it doesn't mean that they're filling vacancies. There are currently 28 postings for RNs in PEI. Of those, only 3 are for permanent positions; one is for a nursing supervisor, one is full time and one is 71% FTE. The rest are temporary (18 of them are part time with the majority of them ending no later than September 2010 and FTEs of 60% or less) or casual (8, including 4 that are for experienced nurses only). For LPNs there are 18 postings, of which 3 are permanent part time 40% or 50% FTEs. The majority are short-term small FTEs and 3 are casual. So just because they're closing the urgent care centre doesn't mean they're hiring.
