Nursing school as a single mom of twins?

Published

I'm researching the possibility of going to nursing school. I'm a single mom of 17 month old twin toddlers and I'm realizing that I have nothing to offer them financially. My soon-to-be-ex husband makes good money, but I need to be able to support myself. I became very interested in nursing after XH heart surgery and my twins 9 week stint in the NICU.

Is it possible to attend nursing school full time and still be a good mother? Honestly, I'd rather attend now when they don't remember it, than wait until they're older.

I have support from my XH financially and with the kids. He wants to support me until I get my degree and is a good dad, so I do have some help, but no family support.

Are there any been there, done that stories?

I will be starting in the fall. I decided to go to nursing school a few years ago and i had 2 little ones. I took the prereqs 1 by 1 so it wouldnt effect the kids so much. If you still need the prereqs it may take a few years anyway, when your done they will in preschool at least. Thats how i set it up. My youngest will be starting full time kindergarden in the fall and i will start the program. It took me longer then most but worked this way for my family. Good luck!

In my short time here is what I have experienced. I am a single mom of two young ones. When I started my pre-reqs my youngest was just one year old. I would take two and three classes at a time at night, I worked full time days (still do) and my parents were very helpful in transporting my daughters to daycare and sitting. I am going to start NS in the fall and my oldest is starting First Grade. I am nervous that I wont be able to put all the focus where it is needed in regards to her schooling while also going to school myself. I WISH I had done this when my daughters were much younger or even before they were born. But we are all here where we are in life for a reason. I believe it can be done, time management and self discipline are key.

Good luck to you and seriously use the support you have!!! :)

honestly i really admire people like you. Im 22 yrs old and about to start nursing school in may. Although im not married nor do i have anykids, i do work 48 hrs a week and go to school full time and sometimes i feel like i have too much on my plate. When i hear or meet people who are single mothers and are going to school it really amazes me and makes me think "if they can do it, i can do it too"...just know your not just doing it for the future of your family ..its people like you who motivate ME to keep going ..so to all the mothers, single or married who can do everything im doing AND have the kids taken care of .... thanks :]

Good for you, and I say go for it! I don't have any children yet, but my husband and I have been trying for almost 5 years. We're going through fertility treatments that could lead to multiples, but I am staying in school no matter what, unless put on bed rest or something, in which case, I would go back afterwards.

By wanting to go back to school in order to better provide for your twins, tells me that you are a great mother! Don't worry, you should totally do it, and believe in yourself!

I am a single mom of a four year old boy who is non stop. I don't know what I would do without his wonderful preschool and grandparents and great grandparents. You can do it, just pace yourself. I was a really big over achiever in high school and took on a lot of hard classes all at once. I was speaking with my psych professor last semester telling him about how I was attempting to do all my pre reqs in one year and I feel like he gave me a really good piece of adivce. He said with all I have on my plate in my life I shouldn't set myself up for failure. Take one or two classes a semester and as the little ones get older it will be easier to have them in school all day. It is manageable, just pace yourself so you don't get burned out before you even get to NS.

I came across this thread because I am a single mother of a two and four year old. I will be starting nursing school in less than two weeks. I am so scared bc I dont want to be away from my kids... but this is only temporary so once I get through this I know that I will be able to provide for my kids without a struggle. Ladies, please share with me your testimony during and after nursing school? How was it? How are you doing now?
