hello all,
i'm new here but i have a few questions i'd like to ask everyone. i am not yet in nursing school (applying in september) and i am about to move. the thing is, i've been offered a job (full time) that i really need. i'm currently working part time as a sales rep but i won't be able to keep up with my bills and stuff without either going full time or changing jobs. i've asked to go full time at my current job but i was told we are already over budget for hours. with my current job i'd probably be able to work around nursing school because they are pretty flexible (the only benefit of staying with them). the new job has asked for a 1 year committment BUT there is basically zero flexibility in the schedule. it's a M-F, sometimes Sat (with one of those other days off) schedule from 8:30 am - 6:30 pm. my boyfriend thinks I should stay with my current employer, but again, money would be an issue for us. i really don't want to put extra stress on him bc he'll be in school too. Sorry for the long windedness but my question is, how are the first 2 semesters of nursing school schedule-wise? If i take the new job, will I be able to take classes around that schedule? I know the schedule varies by school and if it helps I'm applying to Los Angeles Trade Tech, Los Angeles Valley College, & Los Angeles City College. Any info & advice would be greatly appreciated. i apologize if this is in the wrong area. Thank you!

I am not very familiar with your colleges of choice but i did see the first two where community colleges meaning you will be in a two year ADN program?? I am currently in a two year ADN program and just finished my first year. ADN programs are a lot faster and more "crammed" than a BSN (in my opinion). I do not have a job and am not married and have no children and I found the program very demanding of time. For example in the spring i was in 2 nursing classes and physiology with clinicals in both nursing classes... i had class from 8:30am-2 mon and wed, clinicals or observations for one class from 6 am-3pm tuesday and thursdays and clinicals for the other class every friday for 6 hours. on top of huge tests every monday and sometimes several tests a week...I would say if you do not have ALL your pre reqs done for your program and i would spend some time working on those classes and then you could keep working for now. I hope this helps

I tried to take the first clinical and keep my full time job about 35 to 40 hrs a week with commuting , which is not bad at all, and even like that I was not able to do it , if you are taking the clinicals the program is very, not to say extremely demanding. I have to retake my first nursing this sep and I'm quitting my job before I start.

I didn't start yet but my schedule is M-F allday, so i resigned from fulltime work. I do have a job that i work per diem, I also am married so we have another income but our budget requires me to work as much as I can. I'd suggest keeping your flex job and start school and then feel it out if you can handle more hours. It will work out between the both of you. If you have a fulltime job with no flex I think you will stress yourself out and by the way it sounds like NS is stress ENOUGH! My husband and I took away all the extras, like landline, satellite radio, credit cards etc.... we squeezed our budget so it wasn't such a demand for me to work soooo much. NS is going to become your focus and the other stuff will have to follow.
i see. bummer but i guess that's how it has to be. thanks for the answers! :)
