I am currently a pre-nursing student with about half of my prerequisites completed. I live in the Houston area and the prerequisites I have taken were geared towards a local nursing program in the medical center. However, due to a recent change of events, I am moving to the Austin area within the next few weeks. I've looked at applying to the nursing program offered by Texas State University in Round Rock. The only problem with this is that they require more and/or different prerequisites than what I am currently working on. This dilemma will put me back an entire year in regards of when I can apply. As opposed to applying for the Fall of 2013, I will now have to finish all required coursework and apply for the Fall of 2014. (This program unfortunately does not admit students for the Spring semesters.) My question is, in the grand scheme of things, does obtaining my degree a year later than originally planned really matter? At this rate, assuming all goes according to plan and I apply for Fall 2014, I will have my degree before I'm 23. Thank you so much in advance for any help or advice - it is greatly appreciated!

Are you kidding? Gosh you are young! Don't worry about it. I would just wait the extra year..a lot of people run into this problem for one reason or another they don't get into one nursing school so they apply to another, only to find out they have to take more classes.
Don't sweat it, just think you will have a few more classes..which might mean an easier time in nursing school.

I am in the same boat as you, in Maryland. I changed my major at 18 after one year of college. I switched to community college because they offered more class sections so I could actually get into the required classes without waitlisting. Because I am applying to multiple schools, I am taking a large amount pre reqs. I will graduate mostly like in fall 2014 (a semester late) or spring 2015 (a year late). I hate it because I went into college right after high school and really wanted to finish on time. But, I just keep telling myself that it's better to get it done now and I will still be 22 whether I graduate fall 2014/spring 2015 (my bday is in september). I know so many people much older than us in my pre req classes and they constantly tell me how awesome it is that I am doing college right after high school (someone they say they regret not doing) and will have my BSN at only 22. It might seem like a pain to wait, but in the end a year will make no difference when you turn 23 and are a registered nurse :)

I am old enough to be y'all's mom and I got backed up a year when I accepted a job at a large hospital network as a PCT. My thought was having a foot in the door is going to make school and job hunting 50 times easier so I said to hell with the yr and jumped on board! the tuition reimbursement more than pays for that year of classes too. We all have many years of nursing in us. Age is just a number! Good luck!
