Hi everyone! I applied for a scholarship through my areas local HCP Sentara. Well I have the second phase of the application process now, the interview! I have never done this before, never had a true interview, so I was just wondering what others had experienced in interviews. Do's and Don'ts, maybe some people answers to the ever present question" why do you want to be a nurse.." THANKS!!

Hi there Congrats on making it to the interview phase. If you dont mind me asking what SON do you attend? I will be attending SOHP this Fall & will apply for the local scholarship also. I was afraid to apply in June before the start of the program because I didn't know my chances of getting it without having "clinical references".

Whatever you do, don't answer "Because I want to help people." Panels hear that answer so many times because that's what people think panels want to hear. They already know you want to help people or you wouldn't be going to nursing school.

Congrats on making it to this phase!

I just went through this process (which i got!). I was interviewed by a panel of 8 people so it was unnerving to say the least! Definitely know what you said in your letter or essay. They will most likely ask about those details and you want to have all of them straight in your head.

Some other tips:

- Make sure to make eye contact!

- Don't be too low or high energy. Find a happy medium

- Make sure you have eaten! I almost passed out from my blood sugar being too low because I was too nervous to eat beforehand. Looking back I would have had a smoothie or something

- I got the famous "Tell us a little about yourself and your future plans" The future plans part was hard for me because I want to do so much with nursing but you need to give focused answers!

- I also did some research into the interests of the organization giving the scholarship. You want to make sure you align your answers with their interests, but not too obviously ;)

- Be yourself and confident! People know when you are faking it

- Don't dress too casually. I think as nursing students we can get into the habit (especially b/c of scrubs!). The person after me wore jeans and he didn't get it- they were giving 4 scholarships.

- "Why do you want to be a nurse?" Answer this without cliches (as another poster mentioned). I answered by pulling in my life experiences and the natural progression toward nursing for me. I talked about my community work, my family's experiences in the medical system and the things that I will bring into my nursing practice (this last point is one made to me by a nursing educator and went over very well).

- Think positive all along. I went in saying to myself, "I am going to get this and if for some reason I do not, I will get another"

Good luck and hope this helps at all!
