Less detail on school clinicals and more detail about your current med-surg experiences. What kind of cases have you worked on? (Diabetics, heart failure, amputations, sepsis, etc). Good luck!

I agree, more details are needed about your work experience. How about some skills/good things about yourself? Also, I think you're missing a word in your objective sentence.

employment history
staff nurse, abc, city, state, dates
- provided nursing care to patients in a 30-bed xxx medical-surgical unit.
legal assistant, employer, city, state, dates
- maintained and organized client files. reviewed, organized and summarized medical records. documented case activity. conducted initial interview with potential clients.

i think for your employment history it would be good to set bullets with short concise descriptions of specific duties i.e.

for the staff nurse part -- i'm just throwing this stuff out there --

*provided nursing care for x number of patients in 30-bed unit

*initiated nursing care for new admissions

*somthing something experience with neurological/cardiac/respiratory/etc. etc. assessments

*performed complex wound care (i.e. surgical wounds, wound vaces, decubitus, etc. etc)

*provided foley and ostomy care, etc. short explanation of what you did

*managed multiple iv/drips/picc, etc, etc, type lines

*something, something peg care

*did you work with vents or trachs? say it

*telemetry?

*patient education....what kind, etc

*what kind of documentation system did you work with (electronic, paper?)

*did you have any supervisory duties? specify

you could do something similar with the legal experience, find a way to relate it to what you do in health care

what kind of legal company did you work for? looks like malpractice/injury? what kind of conversations and help did you provide?

*i.e. facilitated communication between legal team and clients by providing information on complex medical issues

*managed client records and confidentiality according to hipaa guidelines

*provided emotional support and resources to clients in crisis, etc.

*something about your documentation skills - if you've worked in legal i bet you know how important good documentation can be!!!!

* etc, etc.

your objective is a little generic and since you've got some interesting non-nursing experience i'd suggest you find a subtle way to incorporate that experience into what you have to offer as a nurse.

During interviews, they always seem to ask about getting along with co-workers and doing things beyond nursing care. Toss something in there on that if you can think of anything. 'Above and beyond' seems to be what they're after.

"Dedicated, compassionate and detail-oriented Registered Nurse seeking a position as a valued team member with a reputable medical center where I may utilizing my education, training and skills."

I like the idea that you are trying to convey, but it sounds too much like an ad you would see in a newspaper. You want your objective to be sort of like your own personal mission statement. I would re-write as follows:

"To promote and implement a high standard of nursing practice in conjunction with strong interpersonal skills at an advanced medical center where I can utilize my education and training to provide effective patient care."

You are showing that you value teamwork while also stating that you expect a high standard of yourself.

There are a number of things I would change and some of the Previous Posters have said a few. But if you decide not to change much, please correct this part.

It should be "utilize" without the ing.

Thank you everyone for your responses. They were all wonderful and helpful. I've reworked my resume with everyone's suggestions and believe it is much, much better than it was. I surely appreciate the time and effort you all gave to help me.

I would make the objective longer, this section is ever so important! You need to "sell yourself" more. The descriptions of your past work experience should be more detailed and descriptive. I am not saying make it very long, just more descriptive. Try this link as well http://www.cv-shop.com/

Upadate: I applied using my revised resume and didn't hear back from them. A week or so later I received my reciprocal license and applied for the same position just adding this new information to my resume. I received a call 10 minutes later to schedule an interview. About a week after the interview I was offered the job. Sorry I haven't provided an update until now but it was hectic with preparing for and making a long-distance move as well as making several quick trips inbetween to complete all the steps required for employment. Just wanted to give you guys an update and again express my gratitude for all your help.
