Scope of Practice

  1. I currently work at an LTC in Missouri that allows CMTs to enter patient orders into the EMR. Once they are entered, they still have to be verified by a nurse (LPN or RN). Is this helpful or hurtful to the profession?

How is this any different than an HUC entering orders?

What is the origin of said orders?

If they're written/faxed, etc. that has been a common part of the unit secretary role for eons. If they're phone/verbal orders that's a huge no-go.

After posting the question, I conducted a little research. Apparently CMS has determined that to enter orders that meet the "meaningful use" standard staff entering the order must be "credentialed medical assistants" or "licensed medical personnel."
