Share you Deaconess Experiences!

Nursing Students Online Learning

I've started looking into the Deaconess route for the LPN to RN program.

I'd appreciate it if anyone would share their experiences (good and bad) with Deaconess, even if you decided not to enroll... and why. What was the typical wait list like?

Thanks!

Hi Poe Me,

I was wondering, why did you leave DCN? You are obviously from the St. Louis area if you are attending Jewish. I also left DCN - it had to do with clinical site issues. (And for the record of anyone who might imply that I "flunked out", I had a high GPA.)

What a number of people who are in the program NOW do not realize is that they are benefitting from the complaints the students from A YEAR OR MORE AGO had. Having been there, I would like to know why you left. At first, I thought I might know who you are. But if you are in Jewish now, you were probably a few semesters before me. Depending on why you left, and I have a hunch, we need to talk about something that might be of great interest to you.

I, for one, do not see you as having a "chip on your shoulder", but as someone who spent a lot of money for a program that, at the time, did not deliver. I am glad that DCN has made (so I hear) some positive changes and that those who are paying that kind of tuition are satisfied with the program. It does not, however, change what happened to another group of us.

Peace

i left DCN for my own reasons it wasn't because i flunked out. i was like so many others was unhappy with the program period. just everything from the way we took our exams which was totally done online then the skills thing which was optional then the clinical issue. i was so pissed when i found out that our instructor will not be with us for clinical. the whole way this is set up is a joke and not to mention very expensive. more nursing programs r flexible and esp jewish. when i first started i only had lecture 2 days a wk for 3 hrs. that wasn't bad. i was still able to work and have time for studying. don't get me wrong i am all for distance learning. i've taken 3 telecourses and i'm glad i did. but for starting out in nursing i'm totally against it. now the bsn online is wonderful so i've heard ppl say and i'm thinking of going that route when i finish my asn at barnes jewish.

by the way do u attend barnes jewish? if not what nursing school do u go to?

I am a DCN online grad. This program was the ONLY option that I had in completing my degree (short of quitting my full time job and waiting through a 2 year wait list at a local school), so I obviously feel that this program is of great value(i know it's expensive, but it was sooo worth it to me).

However, most of the current students probably don't know alot of the things that some of the past students have gone through in order to get this program to where it is today (still has a long way to go). There were many extremely unfair practices that went on in the early days of the program. These are probably some of the very things that poe me is still bitter about. While I agree, poe me should probably let some of her anger towards the program go, I believe her anger is probably justifiable.

Nadja, I am somewhat aware of the item of great interest that you mentioned above. Is it possible for you to PM me about the details and possible ways to be involved.

As a DIrector of Nursing and a Nurse Recruiter, I can tell you that in most cases I don't care were a nurse graduated from. I"ve had nurses that graduated from schools like Johns Hopkins, that I wouldn't let touch my worst enemy, and a grad from Regents who is the Chief Flight Nurse for a large FLight Service and is one of the best nurses I know.

I don't think anyone has asked me in the past 10 years or so were I graduated from.

As to federal investigation, If I recall that investigation had nothing to do with the schools, it was about one of the "fly by night" publishing/help you study programs that has gotten all the attention. The schools and the nursing programs themselves haven't had any problems.

Education is an evolving science, and the best sytem has programs that meet all learning styles. Deaconess is just one of the ways.

MY HERO!!

Your posts seem to be rude to the Deaconess students. These people didn't cause your problems there.

On line education has been an option in many fields for at least a decade. I can't see the greater benefit of sitting in a classroom listening to an instructor, over learning from prepared printed material and being tested over its contents. A traditional class with your, classmates, and a teacher meeting in person is only as good as the instructor. I have had many classes that I was better off going completely from the book and printed materials than the instructor's lectures. I have had some very poor instructors that did more to confuse the student than impart the knowledge need to master the class.

I am surprised that Deaconess didn't so something to compensate the students in who started in the beginning with their initial botched online program. Deaconess has always been a highly respected school. So has Wash U and Barnes.

Why is it that you are so hostile toward the Deaconess students? It really isn't convencing or flattering to you. I would be thrilled to be a part of either nursing program. I certainly prefer either of them to what the Denver area has available.
