Sent my application to Excelsior today!!!

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

After looking at the packet of info for 6 months - I finally sat down and pulled it all together - requested official transcripts from two universities, called Excelsior and stayed on hold 10 minutes...and then got a really nice guy that said all I have to do right now, today, was send the transcript copies, fill out the app, copy my license, add a resume if I wanted and $60 in some form....

So what happens next? How long does it take to hear back - and then will I hear what I have to take in addition to the nursing part to get my ASN Not sure all my credits will work. Who has done things like psych, or others with Excelsior?

And - gasp - how hard is A&P and Micro??? I figure I have about as good of a chance as anybody - and people DO pass this...I just don't have the time, patience or desire to go sit in a classroom.

Hope there's someone out there that is on the first step too so maybe we can vent, share, cry and cheer each other on.

"i have one small piece of advice. before you take your first nursing concepts test, read kaplan nclex-rn. it will give you great strategies for answering the questions on the nc tests, plus it is great for when you take your nclex."

thanks for that bit of advice dc2rn!

Pam, did you go straight to Excelsior or did you go through the College Network, Chancellors, or one of the other companies?

I thought about going straingt to Excelsior, but I'm confused about which is better.

P.S. I would have to start from scratch......I have no college credits right now.

Pam, did you go straight to Excelsior or did you go through the College Network, Chancellors, or one of the other companies?

Hi J Lynn!

I went straight to Excelsior. The other two aren't part of Excelsior and if I'm not mistaken - only want to sell their study guides. If I've learned anything so far on this board, is to not mess around with anything other than Excelsior's notes, guides, advice etc. They have everything you need and if you are paying them anyway - why pay someone else in addition for their materials only to be successful with Excelsior? And from what I understand too, much is yours for the taking on the site.

Best wishes on the decision you really have already made! And you can't be brave if you're not scared in the beginning!!

Pam, thanks for the reply. The more I read (for the 2nd time) about Excelsior on this board, the more I understand. I should go straight to EC, then join some Yahoo Groups (which I've already have) and check Ebay for study material (if I choose to pay more) from Chancellors (which I keep reading is the best).

I'll make sure I get as much info from "regular" people rather that the college itself before calling them. I want a heads-up on what I'm getting into.

Thanks again.

Thanks everyone!!!!! for all the words of encouragement and advice. Just coming off of the worst, longest week that only underscored my feeling like I've made the best decision. After I've gotten a little rest - get my head running clear again without thinking I'm hearing call lights and dreaming about pts and all the things I didn't get done and almost did and too many pts and no back up and tired feet, legs, back - you know the song.....I will start on these groups, links and head toward A&P.

You are all so wonderful for being there - and I hope to return the favor to another newbie in the near future.

Another thing you can do is try going directly through EC. If you absolutely hate it (you won't) then you can try the publishing company route. It's cheaper than starting with a publishing company and then changing to using just EC's materials (which is what I did before I had a clue). :)

Spazzy, that's a real good tip! I should just go with EC and I could always get the study guides later. I'm guessing I could buy guides off of Ebay too, right?

BTW, thanks for the PM. I understand it better now.

Jlynn- here's a good idea of what you will find on Ebay http://search.ebay.com/excelsior-college_W0QQsokeywordredirectZ1QQfromZR8

I do urge you to beware of people selling their "own notes" or "test tips" on Ebay, though. They are frequently people copying the free stuff from the Yahoo groups and selling them. The study materials from Chancellor's are your best bet. And they sell for much cheaper used on Ebay that you will pay for new from the company- plus no contract obligations.

I checked Ebay and the Chancellors books and tapes are going for over $70 and there are alot of bids. I was just wondering how much these go for "new". Does anyone know?

I bought the set (except for NC-3 which I no longer needed), and they were $250 per Nursing Concept, unless you got five or more (which I did) and then they were $225. Also, since I was not interested in paying it all at once, I liked that they had no-interest financing. In other words, I am not paying any more for them than I would have if I had paid all the money up front.

If you can stand to have other people's highlighting and notes in your books, then the way to go is the used way (obviously) but make sure that they are current issues. The last I heard, all the editions should say Fall of 2003 or October 2003. That should be checked with somebody else who might have a more current sent (I got mine this past November, but things can change pretty quickly).

With that, let me assure you that although I did buy the Chancellor's I wound up essentially not using it. You can get everything you need online for free. Really.

Ditto on the yahoo groups, they are a great resource. The self-tests for micro and A&P there are great, as well as the Excelsior study guides.

You also might want to pick up the Cliff's quick review guides for A&P and Micro. Much easier to digest in short sittings than the books...
