Online Science Courses

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Hi all,

I thought that maybe it would be good to have a sticky for online science courses.

I am currently looking for an online/distance learning-- 4-- credit microbiology course. Of course it has to have a lab.

I know that both ccconline and Rio Salado offer these courses. Anyone have experience with either one of these in regards to microbiology, i.e. testing, level of difficulty, user friendly technology. I know from experience with Rio that the exams are proctored but how does ccconline deliver their exams?

If you have a link or resources to other colleges offering sciences--please post them here.

I am finding that most schools are not scrutinizing the classes that much. As long as it is from an accredited college, it is ok. Some may need descriptions, but the descriptions do say lab included. I did do labs.

Most schools simply do not have the time to scrutinize your classs. It is painful enough for them to wade through the hundreds of applicants. Also, much of this kind of scrutiny is done by administrators, rahter than the nursing pros.

I spent a lot of time talking to nursing schools yesterday and they acted like they didn't care at all. I had several people tell me to find an online class and get the credits I needed. Seems like they just cared that I had the accurate amount of credits. This was even in regards to Chemistry. They didn;t seem to care what they specified on theor pre-req list. They just seemed to care if I had 6 credits in Chemistry.

Also, most transcripts don't specify distance learning. They just show that you took the class from a particular school with a particular section designation. It is not marked on-line class on the transcript.

Hope that helps. I applied to Hopkins, Yale, UCSF, etc... and no one had issue with any of my classes.

I see that a bunch of people have taken or are taking online lab science courses. Did you have to check with your college first to make sure they accept the course? I only have 3 courses that I need to take before getting into an LPN to RN bridge program and it would be much easier to take Micro online. Any info would be great.. Christine

I sent my college the website and they were able to read the descriptions and accepted them all so far, even interpersonal communication for the summer. :)

I took A&P I & II as well as Microbiology and I am about to take Chemistry. Other than the price, I think it is great. The labs in Microbiology were good. I am not so sure about the labs in A&P, as they were lind of stupid, but I guess I did learn the characteristics of looking at things under glass.

I would recommend CCConline highly.

Hi,

Sounds great!! Please could you give me the website, I need to take Micro.

Thanks :)

I am taking a 3 credit Microbiology course online through Brigham Young University. I got approval from my advisor at Excelsior and was told that this course satisfies the micro requirement.....

I took a course (nutrition) through BYU. They are very organized and I am sure your experience will be a good one.

Good Luck

I took Microbiology online class through Bringham Young Univ and passed with a B plus. It was not easy, but I did it. Anyone interested I do have notes, and some quiz answers.

Anybody know of other online A&P classes that Excelsior accepts????

D.

Excelsior accepts all kinds of classes. It is nor very rigid at all. Even from LVN programs. You have to be an LVN or at least a Paramedic to apply to their program. Be careful. Some states are no accepting Excelisior including California.

They offer A & P with lab, Chemistry with lab, & Biology with lab.

Best to check with the school you want to transfer into.

Opal

opalm is right. safest thing to do is check with the school you intend to enroll in to make sure they'll accept online classes. that said, MANY people have posted to the effect that the transcripts from places where you take the online class make no mention of it being an online class. you simply get a transcript from xyz college saying you took A&P I or whatever. My A&P I this semster is $460 (4 units x $115 per unit) plus the books are around $200. haven't bought em yet. definitely more expensive than a regular cc but you can do the labs online using ADAM software and as I posted elsewhere, not dissecting an animal is easier for me because of my religious beliefs.

Good luck!

Cheers,

DL
