Online MSN???

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Are there any schools online that have REGIONAL ACCREDITATION status for an MSN program? I think I am done with the "brick and mortar" model after earning my BSN. I've had excellent instructors, but many traditional students are not into the "teamwork" assignments, and it is like herding cats trying to meet together.

Excelsior College has ACEN and regional accreditation. I suspect most state universities with online programs also have regional accreditation. You can start by searching for those with CCNE or ACEN accreditation and then drill down to schools that interest you to check their regional status:

I am enrolled in the online MSN-nursing education program at Eastern New Mexico University. It is totally online and affordable at only $230 per graduate level credit.

Thanks. I asked my instructor about online programs as well, and she told me that she applied for one job several years ago, and the unit manager would absolutely never accept anyone who received their degree online.

I think that, several years ago (10 or so), that might be the case. I think, though, it is unfair for that stigma to be present, since there are some who have regional accreditation. I was looking into possibly Kaplan or University of Phoenix.

I just don't have the time to do the Brick and Mortar model anymore.

Are class lectures structured so you can listen to them anytime, or do you have to attend a "virtual class" at a set time?

Not only are Kaplan, University of Phoenix, and other investor-owned schools grossly expensive, but hiring managers will immediately suspect you completed your degree via an online learning format if they see these colleges on your resume.

On the other hand, online degrees from regional state universities or private nonprofit colleges (e.g. University of Wyoming, Missouri State, University, Crown College) are a different story because no one ever needs to know you earned your degree online.

It is not as if your degree or transcript will be stamped with a demarcation to indicate your program was 100 percent online.

In my experience, Kaplan and University of Phoenix are not thought very highly of once you get out there. I may be sparking some controversy here, but that is just what I've noticed. I found my MSN- online program by searching through the U.S. News and World Report's National rankings (among other things). I am going to a school in the top 10 and have been pleased with the professors and the school so far. It is a brick and mortar school that also runs an online program. Good luck to you in your search!

They offer MSN tracks in Leadership/Management and Nursing Education. I have my MSN from and am three weeks away from completing my doctorate at Touro. I was accepted to two DNP programs and a post-master's NP program with this degree.

Online degrees are offered by almost every college, even Georgetown! The good news for nurses is that there are so many choices you really can shop around. My boss says all that matters is the program is accredited. Many professors at the local community college by me got online masters degrees (Walden U. is very popular). Personally I would never pay for Walden.. way too much $$$. I work at a magnet hospital and many people in the Education dept, nursing supervisors and other managers have online degrees from all over!

I am in Chamberlain and love it. My hospital has an articulation with them so I get tuition reduction, plus I get tuition reimbursement of $7500 a year. I have been very please so far!
