Judge sides with hospital in nurse dispute

  1. salem-a federal judge overturned an arbitrator's decision in a case involving the weekend night staffing of on-call nurses at the north shore medical center.

    arbitrator diane zaar cochran's decision to uphold a union grievance was "palpably faulty," u.s. district court judge richard stearns stated in an eight-page order.

    the dispute began with a nurse's grievance challenging weekend night-shift duties of post-anesthesia care nurses at salem hospital. those nurses handle the most serious post-surgery cases in the recovery room. when on-call, they are given long-range beepers in case they have to be called back to work.
