Jahi McMath is back in the news

Nurses Headlines

Published

Nope, she's not dead yet! Her parents have her hooked up to everything imaginable & have been talking to a retired neurologist, Dr. Alan Shewmon. The family filed papers to revoke her CA death certificate & we should have an answer in the coming weeks.

State of New Jersey, thank you very much. And remember, she did collect through Gofundme.

I believe that she is still living here in NJ - the only state that has some loophole in its laws that bypasses death pronouncement in order to continue providing care.

S OM E H O W, by remaining alive, the ability to legally charge more serious malpractice claims against the Calif hospital and collect larger wrongful death settlements would be possible for the family.

I figure she's 18 or so (I'd have to check it out.) Faith, hope and family aside, I can only wish that God, Allah, Mohammed, Whomever(?) remembers her.

I wouldn't trust the videos they made as "proof" Jahi is alive.

Yeah, Terri Schiavo's parents had videos, too.

Just because we can, doesn't mean we should...God, how I wish we would stop torturing people.

Well, the good news is that she's not being "tortured" -- because she's dead.

I'm mostly curious who is paying for all of her care. Her family doesn't have a pot to piss in, so these many many millions of dollars in medical care are being paid for by whom??

I understand the state/hospital/taxpayers footing the bill for a child with a life expectancy. But a child that is dead? Anyone that is dead??

I've seen websites talk about how she's supposedly decomposing very slowly, and that's why there have been no new pics in years. When there is a pic, it's with a filter and tons of make-up, fake nails, etc. The old pics show her still very overweight, which wouldn't likely be the case since she's only being fed through a feeding tube. Eyes glued shut. Lots of weirdness.

I'm just posting links. I am not saying they are great sources, because I haven't worked around life support patients, hospice, or anything like that. Maybe some very experienced nurses can speak to some of the claims in here.

Stories from the trauma bay: Jahi McMath update...not really

After Jahi was declared dead & received a death certificate the family high tailed it to New Jersey & have been there ever since.

Yeah, they love to post pictures. But the pictures are always so photoshopped with tops of filters, fake nails to cover her real nails (because I'm sure her real nails look horrible), sunglasses or something covering her eyes (duh, she's dead! You don't want to show a dead person's eyes. Dead, harhar, give away). I'd love to see a real, untouched photo of her & a video where there don't zoom in of her foot/hand/arm/etc so we can really see her & if see she is moving on command or being poked & prodded (my guess) by her family.

Exactly. A physician told me this a long time ago and it really stuck with me.

Boy the parents sure know how to ride this train. Once we forgot about her, bam here they come again for another outpouring of support and money.

Poor kid.

Let her body die.

I just want to rip everything out of her & let her body rest already. I wonder how long her body will keep going.

There's another previous long-running thread re Jahi here on AN. Lots of care questions and various scenarios were discussed. There were many clinical issues raised. Some serious deep thinking there.

Well, the good news is that she's not being "tortured" -- because she's dead.

ElkPark, I agree, to an extent. But keeping a braindead body alive is, in itself, a form of torture. For the victim, for the family, for anyone else who still cares about this poor young woman. We, as a society, need to get much, much better at letting go. I speak from very personal experience. It's one of the hardest things, but also the kindest.

Judge: Oakland teenager may not be brain dead after all

I thought this paragraph was interesting:

"An attorney for the family is arguing Jahi is alive and therefore entitled to more than the cap of $250,000 on medical malpractice lawsuits involving children who die as a result of surgery."
