  1. Nicotine patch kits offered in PA
    Beginning Monday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health will begin offering 30-day starter kits of free nicotine replacement patches to qualified applicants who call The American Cancer Society of Pennsylvania's toll-free Quitline at 1-800-784-8669.

    To qualify, callers must agree to enroll in a free cessation program with the Quitline, set an actual date for quitting, and answer several questions about any medical conditions that would rule out safe use of the nicotine patches. The cessation program ranges from three to six phone sessions. Resources for smokers interested in quitting include the Quitline and the state Web site,

    I hope other states follow the example. People need more assistance with quitting. As nurses we see so many problems complicated by smoke.
