    The article indicates that credentials are checked every December. Are they not verified upon hire?

    At first I thought that this happened in the US. I was reading that "Right now, this is not a criminal matter. No one is arrested, no one is charged. If charges are warranted, we may revisit it." and was confused. Maybe it is not a crime in other countries? Is it possible to impersonate a physician there too and only be fired?

    I worked with someone who was hired as an RN. She had worked there 8yrs. I guess they didnt verify licenses. We just gave a copy of our license once they were renewed. Looking back, she was always willing to make copies for everyone. Anyway, the attorney general reviewed the case and decided not to do anything. The company we worked for swept the problem under the rug. I couldnt believe she just got a slap on the hand - the only thing that happened was that she lost her job. I think she had been an emt years ago. She was very knowledgable of nursing skill and technique, so we didnt have a clue.

    I too worked with a nurse that was a "fake". She had the exact same name as her sister-in-law that was a nurse, and the SIL had passed away( of course, none of us knew that, until she was busted!) She somehow stole the sister-in-laws license, and used it for years! I am not sure how she kept getting away with it, but this was several years ago, and things weren't all computerized like they are now. She was a very compassionate nurse, and gave excellent bedside care to the patients. She could not start an I.V. though, and there were other procedures that she would ask us to help her do. All of the patients liked her and she had even been Employee of the Month! There were several occasions that she would ask a question, and we would kind of wonder how she could get out of school and not know the answers to some relatively easy nursing scenaraios. Anyway, we were all in shock when we found out that we had been working beside her for almost a year! She did get sent to jail, but she only got probation, as that was her 1st offense!

    Credential fraud is everywhere. Any profession where licensure = a decent salary will see fraud.

    I worked with an LPN once who had stolen her sister's identity (who had then become a SAHM) to get work. When she was found out she was really annoyed. She felt that the fact that she did a good job should be enough.

    Licensure/credentials are more than the oft quoted "piece of paper". It is a matter of standards and public safety. My unit deals with commercial driver fraud and you'd be horrified to know how many people in big rigs driving next to you on the highway are frauds.

    The nurse in question was from the Phillipines and his story is totally weird. He claims to have attempted the Canadian exam twice but has no record of his attempts. My local paper said he presented a photocopy of a license at his original interview. The nursing school he attended has the highest failure rate of nurse graduates writing their exam in the Phillipines.

    He wanted to earn a living and there is a shortage of nurses is his excuse.

    I've heard of nurses being allowed to work as Graduate Nurses until the exam is written. I'd say his nurse manager dropped the ball and the HR dept at the hospital in question is incompetent.

    i don't know of any facility which would accept a photocopy of a license,
    this is putting a lot of patients at risk
    transferring from one country to another may make it difficult to determine if an original license is authenic
    i worked with a nurse once who was fired from every facility in area, and she was the most incompetent nurse i have ever seen - i have often wondered about her

    I believe there ought to be some strict background checks of any staff whether foreign or not prior to being hired, especially when half the world is trying to battle terrorism these days. Obviously, the HR from this particular hospital was not that concerned whether the license he was working under was legit or not. So what if the nurse claims that there's a shortage...he failed the boards hence he's incomptent to practice.

    So weird! and also upsetting. We know how much work nursing school entails and to think that someone would just fake a license and take people's wellbeing so lightly is just .... :angryfire

    I work for a city hospital and not only did I have to present my original nursing school degree, sealed transcripts, and original license but I also had to give them my fingerprints so they could run a full background check including FBI.

    I actually felt good knowing that all new employees are screened this way.

    After I started working and meeting coworkers, I realized they don't really catch being crazy with the background check

    How is this even possible?? Every place that I have worked wanted copies of the originals.......

    And I am curious about these "unusual things" they reference....

    I dont know If i was the only one that found some of these post humorous. I had to laugh at the fake nurse that got employee of the month. Or the one that had been an emt and appeared very knowledgeable that even her co workers did not have a clue. I must say the fact that a fake nurse could not be distinguished from the genuine licenced nurse points out the problems in the nursing curricula. If one was to apply the nursing process to this problem, one could argue the outcome, was accomplished, delivering good nursing, except without a license. I take a less puntitive approach, and argue the fake nurses, that were doing work well enough to earn employee of the month, should be allowed to work with some modifications or restrictions. Maybe demoted to Lvn or other. What could be suggested is that perhaps one should be allowed to challenge, or bypass the traditional nursing requirements in a legal way. What is best a competent fake nurse or an incompotent licensed nurse, or even a licensed uncaring nurse that is in nursing just for the money?
    I also pose the questions how many experienced Lvns find themselves working with less experienced licensed Rns that make major errors? Or experienced Rns that see licensed Mds make major errors. You see all that glitters is not in the license, or is it?

    I did not pass the clinical hurdle of my last semester of my Rn program.
    I dont think it was me that failed but the way nursing is structured. I think the clinical should just go into some form of externship. I learned that after 6 months of working in acute care I felt the needed confidence to complete my clinical. My biggest regret is waiting to return for my Rn..when I am my 60's now. And guess what? I am facing the dreaded clinical again. Wish me luck,

    I wonder if this is a trend that we will start to see more and more d/t nursing becoming better paid and so many new facilities seem to be expanding or building new. Which of course makes them want nurses NOW and might make them unable to do the full reference checking needed to verify experience and licenser.
