Personally, I think pushing the flu shot on nurses is a JCAHO-backed, government secret conspiracy to keep us healthy so that they don't have to address the nursing shortage . . . or something like that.

no matter what your reason or excuse is – refusing to get the flu vaccine is just plain stupid. what other infectious disease would you prefer to get – as opposed to the vaccine? tetanus? diphtheria? polio? pertussis? measles? mumps? chickenpox? meningitis? typhus? cholera? hepatitis a? hepatitis b?

i think we all know that influenza and these diseases are completely different from each other and so are their respective vaccinations. apples and oranges.

these are diseases that are vaccine preventable, and we have all availed ourselves of them as the need arose. to deny the protection of this vaccine for yourself, your family and those you care for is just plain stupid. it is difficult to reconcile the medical axiom, “first do no harm”, with someone who refuses to be vaccinated. i ask you – if you get influenza, to whom do you take it home to? husbands? a defenseless little one? children? grandchildren? parents? grandparents? an immuno compromised person?
you do have the right to refuse the vaccine, but i don’t think you should be allowed to work in healthcare. i think you should isolate yourself from society and take your chances of getting influenza without endangering the rest of us.
you also have the right to jump off a bridge. it is not a particularly healthful practice, but at least it causes bodily harm to only your self.
you put yourself out there as a professional healthcare provider, trained, educated, degreed and licensed. i expect you to be as well protected, as it is within your power to be, before you have any contact with me, my family, or any other member of the human race.
as many people will die this year from influenza as will die from breast cancer. we each need to do our part to make sure that we are not a part of the equation in an influenza death.
we can either maintain our autonomy and status as professionals and police ourselves, or we will be policed. if the healthcare worker vaccination rate does not go up, then it will be mandated and legislated for us. at least fifteen states have laws on the books to mandating health care workers in snf’s, to get the vaccine, and many states mandate offering the influenza and pneumonia vaccines to all patients over 65 during flu season.

this is where i take serious issue. i won't tell you whether i receive the vaccine or not because it is irrelevant. i understand that you are saying that you want to make sure that we are not a part of the equation but the way i see it, people are still getting visitors from the outside of the facility who are not required to get the vaccine and the residents or patients themselves are not required to get the vaccine. you are eliminating one small source and ignoring a much larger one. if you want to mandate healthcare workers be required to get the vaccine, then let's take it all the way. why aren't we requiring all visitors and residents (and the docs, too, don't leave them out?) do the same in addition to appropriate handwashing protocols for all who enter the facility? my body is mine and i take exception to being told what i can and cannot do with it. i would like to see the vaccine offered consistently and with thought to healthcare worker's schedules. mandating is not the answer.

don’t think it is going to stop there.
as i see it vaccines will become mandatory. either we act responsibly by getting the vaccine voluntarily 0r we will be mandated to get it by state and federal regulations. it is your choice,
( and we may have already blown it).
(i am not talking about those with severe allergies or who have legitimate contraindications, )

When I was in nursing school I had the flu shot once- it was mandatory. I had it the 2nd time before going to work in ER and I had a reaction which consisted of uticaria- everywhere, itching, and being dizzy. So, now that I have had a documencted reaction I am free from ever having to have it again. Incidentally, I am not allergic to eggs. Onset was 20 mins from the shot. The look on the girls face in OH&S was priceless. I kept reassuring her my airway was fine.LOL

In 2001, just 257 people died from the flu. (Fifty-nine percent of these deaths occurred in people 75 years or older; 75 percent occurred in people 55 years or older.) To put these numbers in perspective, 3,454 Americans died from malnutrition in 2001.

Currently, the CDC has responsibility for both vaccine safety and promotion, which is an inherent conflict of interest increasingly garnering public criticism.

The CDC Foundation was established to connect outside partners and resources with CDC scientists to build programs that can substantially enhance CDC’s impact. [its a conflict of interest to have a for profit coporation tell American people what vaccines they should be taking]

My mom who has been a nurse for years and getting the flu shot for years, developed a severe reaction last year from the flu shot, It started off as a rash at the area of the injection, that would not go away, she had three biopsies on it. It started effecting her organs, and after months of doctor care she is finally better.

My son is severe/profoundly disabled, he developed hand tremors shortly after receiving the flu vaccine. They are consistent with Parkinsons. He is now 20 years old. Last year he did not receive the flu vaccine, and the home for the most severely disabled kids in my state all received the flu shot. There was an epidemic of the flu a couple of months later, my son did not get the flu. Another mother with a severely disabled child, her son has been getting worse every year, now he can no longer even lift his head and is in full body tremor(not seizures) The mom told me her son has been getting the flu shot every year for 15 years from the time he was 2 years old.

WHY most nurses DON'T get the Flu Vaccine, Maybe its because they are THE most informed! They see first hand patients who suffer.

200,000 Americans die each year from ADVERSE reactions to medications and millions are left disabled every year. This does not include drug error. We have a real crisis that should be exposed.

I have a question for an RN/physiologist here. What besides the egg can one be allergic to in the flu shot? Last year after a flu shot I became extremely dizzy, had some problems swallowing, BP went up a bit (0h 160/106 or so),HR up to about 100 . My typical rate about 52. This was a day AFTER the shot, not in the immediate fiften minutes. I've had many flu shots before with only an occasional mild day or two of tiredness. My doctor is actually going to refuse to give me another flu shot. (She is also aware that I get huge red reactions to PPDs.. they are not positive in that they are not indurated. Have had CXR's just in case. I also had odd reactions -dizzy,temp, mild BP elevations with Hep B vaccine and also with Td.) SO I am wondering if it's possible that a preservative could cause this? Any thoughts.

web page, it says .20 mcg of mercury for tuna. pregnant women are
warned not to eat fish high in mercury.

    http://www.fda.gov/fdac/reprints/mercury.html

the flu vaccine contains 25mcg of mercury that is injected into pregnant women.

bayer made rhogam that contained 35 mcg of mercury, bayer in 2003

petitioned oehha to take thimerosal/mercury off the list of
    reproductive toxins,

here is oehha reply to bayer.

    oehha (office of environmental health hazard assesment) reports;

"the scientific evidence that pma and thimerosal cause reproductive
    toxcitity is clear and voluminous.

the evidence for its reproductive toxcitity includes severe mental
retardation or malformations in human offspring who were poisoned
when thier mothers were exposed to ethylmercury or thimerosal while
    pregnant."

    neurotoxicology

thimerosal induces dna breaks, caspase-3 activation, membrane
    damage, and
cell death in cultured human neurons and fibroblasts

thimerosal (sodium ethylmercury-thiosalicylate) is an antibacterial
and antifungal mercurial compound used as a preservative in
biological products and vaccines, in concentrations ranging from
    0.003 to 0.01% (30-100 g/ml) (ball et al., 2001). thimerosal
contains 49.6 % mercury by weight and releases ethylmercury as a
metabolite. in the body, ethylmercury can be converted to inorganic
mercury, which then preferentially accumulates in the kidneys and
brain (blair et al., 1975). inorganic mercury is known to induce
membrane and dna damage (ferrat et al., 2002;ben-ozer et al., 2000),
and in cell culture conditions it was shown to be mutagenic and
generate dna breaks in concentrations below 500 nm (schurz et al.,
2000). ethylmercury can significantly increase the concentration of
inorganic mercury in many organs (magos et al., 1985). after in vivo
administration, ethylmercury passes through cellular membranes and
concentrates in cells in vital organs, including the brain, where it
releases inorganic mercury, raising its concentrations higher than
equimolar doses of its close and highly toxic relative methylmercury
    (magos et al., 1985).

I don't get the flu shot anymore. First time I got it, had fever, nausea and vomiting and aching all over--within 16 hours of receiving the shot. So, I know it didn't give me the "flu", but to me...the flu is fever, nausea and vomiting and aching all over. Whatever you call it, it's called the flu or flu symptoms.

i was working for a pediatric answering service during that year when the flu that was going around wasn't the strain that the shot had been developed for and i couldn't believe the mayhem over the flu shot. i myself don't get the shot, i have my reasons and most important to me is being under chiropractic care has kept me from getting sick. i last had the flu in 1990. i got a triple whammy. along with the flu i also got a sinus infection and ear infection.

Per chance, does anyone know how many Infectious Disease MDs are not getting the vaccine? I am asking because, I have actually heard one ID refuse to take it.

P.S. Sorry OP, I am not trying to hijack. I was just curious

my youngest son became a raving animal after his 18 month shots. he went from normal to banging his head and pitching horrific fits within a week. i strongly suspect the thimerasol. doctors have tossed around "pervasive developmental disorder (mild autism)", "asperger's (a different form of mild autism)", and now bipolar disorder. he is almost 7...my child stopped being "normal" a long time ago...and, now i struggle to do the best i can with him...hoping he will end up a productive member of society and not in jail. i can thank the cdc/pharm companies for that. hey...the pharm companies are making money off of him since he has to take risperdal. why would they want to stop some vaccinations when they can make more money in the long run? :angryfire but, don't get me started on that.

as for the flu shot? i came down with chickenpox 2 weeks after the shot. i had lived 28 years without getting chickenpox...even being around infected kids (along with patients with shingles)...but, i guess being straight injected with it was too much for my body to handle.

so, no...i won't get the flu shot. i've lived 31 years now without getting it...i'll take my chances.

This is a very interesting thread. I can't quite decide, is it pro or con the flu vaccine? Is any one tallying this?

I'll only say this. Several of my patients came down with the flu 3 years ago.
They actually were cultured and were positive. Most of them had received the vaccine.
This was the first time that we had ever been asked to culture anyone. The request was from the CDC. We were then told to give Tamiflu to the positive cases. There was no noticeable difference in outcome.

I used to get an absolutely horrible case of the flu every single year, until I got the flu shot.

I don't have time to get sick like that so ...

    It certainly works for me.

I'm really surprized and somewhat shocked that so many educated healthcare professionals would buy into the false myths about the flu vaccine.

Do they all think that the CDC is lying? Is everything they taught us in school wrong?

I got the vaccine last week and now I have a mild cold. Does that mean the flu shot caused it? No ... everybody I know has the same cold. The vaccine takes two weeks to work. But after reading this thread it looks like most people would blame the flu vaccine for every possible ailment.

Don't we owe it to the patients to protect them as much as possible?
