Caregivers give homes strike alert

  1. 3 facilities face Tuesday walkouts

    About 250 union workers at three Jersey Shore nursing homes warn they will go on strike Tuesday if talks do not yield a new contract.

    The workers- including registered nurses, certified nursing assistants and dietitians-are employees at Avante at Red Bank, Atlantic Coast Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Lakewood and Crystal Lake Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Berkeley.

    The contracts between the centers and workers represented by Local 1199 of the Service Employees International Union expired March 31. Negotiations on various issues, including wages and the amount the employers will contribute toward health care, have been under way for a couple of months, union spokesman Roy Garcia said.
