Bush Supports Limits on Morning-after Pill

  1. By Susan Heavey
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Monday he supports restricting access to emergency contraception for minors, as regulators weigh wider access to the "morning-after" pill. Bush's comment was his first direct public statement on the politically charged issue that has delayed a Senate confirmation vote on his nominee to head the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Andrew von Eschenbach.

George Bush is not good for public health or women's issues. His administration also had issues with the cervical cancer vaccine. They thought that such a vaccine would encourage sexual activity. Only 2 more years hopefully!

Once again, fear and superstition overcome reason and scientific process.
Think of the abortions that would be prevented! If they really wanted to prevent them, making this easily available (next to the candy counter, folks) would be the logical............oh, wait................hummmm........

Holy smokes. What a spin on this story.

Pres. Bush practically endorsed the OTC sell of the morning after pill with one limitation: that it not be sold to minors WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION.

And I'm sure that'll be enforced, just like the ban on selling cigarettes to minors is always enforced.

It's his RIGHT that should be troubled by the comments he made in his press conference on this issue, not the LEFT.

If fact, if you can find a tape, you should WATCH that interview from earlier in the week and see just how sheepish he was when he admitted that the only problem he had with it was that minors needed more then just OTC instructions for it.

(Scroll all the way down, it was the last question asked.)

"Q Thank you very much. Mr. President, some pro-life groups are worried that your choice of FDA Commissioner will approve over the counter sales of Plan B, a pill that, they say, essentially can cause early-term abortions. Do you stand by this choice, and how do you feel about Plan B in general?

THE PRESIDENT: I believe that Plan B ought to be -- ought to require a prescription for minors, is what I believe. And I support Andy's decision. "

The question was about Plan B being made OTC because of Bush's choice of FDA Commissioner. Pres. Bush's answer: I support Andy's decision.

    Sheesh.

Tim - I was thinking the same thing. As the mother of a teenager (and two adult sons) I completely see his point about minors.

And yes, the "far right" has more to complain about than the "far left".

I just had to laugh when I read the first couple posts...there is no end to the misrepresentation of the truth.

An administration farther to the right than this one would 'goose-step'.

And an administration farther to left of the Clintons would sanction pedophilia and and the teachings of Stalin and Lenin.

And what the article doesn't say is that today the FDA moved the drug from a prescription only drug to OTC with an exception for minors.

So they have made the drug more available to people yet the article states

"Bush Supports Limits on Morning-after Pill"

Feel free to read the memo from Dr. Steven Galson, MD, MPH Director, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research as to his decision / recommendation to the FDA on Plan B
