Texas Board of Nursing- misdemeanor

Nurses Criminal

Published

Hello, I have a few questions. I'm a pre-nursing student and will be taking the teas next July. In 2015 I got a class b misdemeanor for a DUI in Texas. I've completed probation & would like to apply for a scholarship program that helps cover nursing school costs. They advised me that since I have a conviction I will need to appeal to the BON to see if they'll even allow me to sit. I won't even be taking my NCLEX UNTIL 2021. Has anyone had any experience with this? I know I'll get into my nursing program because of my grades, but if I won't be able to sit for boards then it's not worth it.

The Texas BON is unique as they have a process for pre-approving students upon enrollment. As long as you are approved at that time and keep your nose clean, you can sit for NCLEX. That's why your scholarship is asking this.

Thank you for your response. Sorry if this is a silly question but I'll finish my pre-reqs next semester then will have a semester off because ranking doesn't take place again until July. Should I contact the board of nursing now for pre-approval? That way I can apply for the scholarship, or if I rank and get accepted into the program then I'm pre-approved and THEN i can apply for the scholarship.

I *think* the school submits the request. I would call the school and ask- I am not in TX but have a colleague who is a program director there.
