PA or CT with 2 misdemeanors

Nurses Criminal

I got a North Dakota license before my court martial in 2016. I lied about steroids so I got possession and obstruction of justice. It shows up on fingerprint checks, but not online state checks.

I'm moving to Pennsylvania or Connecticut in 2 years. I already got my PA license (no fingerprints required) and plan on telling either BON about my record. I figured having 3 years experience, 2 as a supervisor, and a Master's degree would help compared to being a new grad.

Any advice on which state would be more accepting? Anybody know if it's true that CT only requires felonies to be disclosed on applications?

Practitioner Licensure General Policies and Procedures has this (emphasis mine):

"the Department has the authority to deny licensure to an individual who has committed or been found guilty of committing a felony or an act which does not conform to the accepted standards of the profession"

Even if your crime is not a felony, it could easily qualify as being an act which doesn't conform to accepted standards. The most accurate source for your answer would be the CT BON. Contact them and ask--do it anonymously by e-mail if you prefer.

Best of luck.

I emailed the BON and get this...

Dear Mr. *******:

It's true that the nature of a crime may impact a person's eligibility for licensure, but the crime committed can only be considered if it is a felony. We are not authorized under Connecticut law to investigate and take action based upon misdemeanors. You do not need to disclose your misdemeanors when you apply, and even if you do, they will not impact your eligibility for licensure.

I hope this information is helpful.

Congrats on the good news that you will not be running into any trouble if/when you apply in CT.

I posted about a month ago asking whether or not a misdemeanor DUI will keep me from obtaining a license in CT, but no one responded. Reading what you have just posted, and the fact that the information you provided came straight from the CT BON, has just relieved me of so much stress I've had over this for a while now. I was just too paranoid to contact the board on my own in fear they would figure out who I was somehow. By any chance, do you know if the same "rules" of criminal history disclosure applies to RN applicants, as it does APRN applicants (assuming thats what your applying for since you have your masters).

Thanks for coming back to post a conclusion to your situation, seems a lot of members do not.

please keep us updated with your case

Thanks and good luck

I don't plan on moving until July of 2019 so I haven't applied anywhere. I'm terrified I'll get an ethical warrior in HR that decides they need to report me to my current state BON and I'll lose everything. I'm currently in contact with a PA nursing lawyer. I asked for advice on telling the PA BON about my record (I already have a PA license), and he's implying they'll destroy me. I'm leaning toward just applying for work in CT, although they'll see my license is clean in my current state proving I haven't been honest with my current job/BON. Ugh.
