@verene I do not have my license yet. My nclex is in June.

I've had my cover letters proof read as well. I've changed my cover letters for each job to tailor it toward the specific hospital.

I will keep sending in job apps!

My passion for nursing lies within pediatrics but I have made it known that I would be happy in medsurg as well to gain value or knowledge and experience. .

Continue to apply with a new cover letter each time that says you want EXACTLY what they have open - whatever that is. Make no mistake - "I would be happy in med surg" and then full stop is probably what you need to be saying.

You will need to look beyond our big cities (as previously mentioned). Texas doesn't exactly have a nursing shortage in DFW, Austin, Houston. We do have a shortage of well-trained nurses but not a shortage of bodies. Look to the far north, west and south if you want a job in TX. Perhaps look at other rural states surrounding Colorado?

Check with THR in Texas - they have something called the Versant program that provides a year of training.

Hang in there. You're graduating with a bunch of other nurses. You'll find something. One of my classmates went on a medical mission trip after graduation in August and had a job by December.

The fact that you do not yet have a license is likely why they're rejecting you automatically. Many places don't even want you to start applying until you are licensed.

Many of the internships here in Texas hire prior to graduation on contingency of passing NCLEX by their start date. This is exactly when they should be applying in the DFW area. Other areas may differ.

That's I thought too. They hire based on the contingency you pass

Thank you I appreciate your advice I have applied to 4 jobs in Texas and have also been denied. I don't understand what I am doing wrong:( I've been working so hard on my cover letters and resume.

I applied for 40 plus jobs before I finally got my first new grad position.

What are you doing wrong?

You simply havent applied to enough places. Many areas get 100s of applications and you just have to keep applying

Sort of.. I said my passion is in pediatrics but I am interested in medsurg as well to gain valuable knowledge and experience. Should I change my wording?

Yes. Say NOTHING about pediatrics when you are applying to adult med surg jobs. If you say "my passion is pediatrics but I am interested in med surg to gain valuable knowledge and experience", the employer reads "I want a job to get the required 1 year experience I need to find a better job in pediatrics." And orienting a new grad is a huge undertaking/the employer is going to want a return on their investment.

Interesting that you say this because that is not at all what the market is like for new grads in my part of the country. If you don't have your job secured by March/April and you're a May grad, good luck finding anything before the end of the year because all of the new grad positions are promised/filled before you get your license in June or July. I had my job offer for September in March of my senior year of college.

Yeah I graduate in August but started applying already. Just waiting on HR to get back to me about scheduling interviews for two positions the HR recruiter liked me for. I absolutely plan to have a job offer before I graduate.

If you do not have your license yet that may be why you are getting rejections.
