How do I....

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I am set to graduate in May and I am dying to try occupational nursing. How do I find a career in occupational nursing! Any advice would be great, I have googled it to no end and am at a loss.

thanks,

It's really a matter of searching for jobs within the types of places you'd like to work. I've seen positions posted for RNs with all kinds of companies.

Specializes in retired LTC.

These positions are highly coveted but they do open up and are advertised. When they do open, I would expect that those with experience and education would be preferred as well as holding certification.

Specializes in Critical Care, Education.

The occ health jobs I am familiar with require clinic nursing skills & in-depth knowledge of OSHA rules & regs. Depending upon the environment, they may also want some ED skills. In a typical office environment, you would only be dealing with minor issues, but there may be much more traumatic events in a heavy industrial setting.

The coolest occ health jobs I ever saw? At USAA in San Antonio back in the '80s ... a HUGE organization. They had a full clinic with 3 nurses who provided a wide range of preventative health services such as 'desk calls' to monitor BP and classes for chronic disease management. They also had a super-dooper (golf cart) emergency response vehicle to deal with MIs and such. They also conducted epidemiological studies. They even hosted RN students for a clinical rotation in community health.

Best of luck to you
