I need feedbacks from anyone re: this. I am Charge nurse, got an employee of the month yet on this same month I was written up for insubordination for sending home a prn CNA, who is lazy and sleeps on her shift over a CNA who is a team player, conscientious and signed up for a 7 shift contract. I was also put on probation for 60 days. The reason I was told they( nurse admin) wants to make sure I can do the job as a Charge Nurse. No adv erse writeups to support this. All allegations were just rumors and hearsay.

The history behind this, is that most of the team prefer to work with me than the other charge nurse who is bipolar and a pathological lier. A lot of complains were brought to admin regarding her and none by me. Now the table is turn around me. Please comment. I appreciate everyone's feedback.

just a few questions... how long have you been a charge nurse? under what circumstances did you send the cna home? who picks employee of the month? exactly who put you on probation, the nursemanager, the director of the unit? what policy or procedure did you violateby sending this employee home?

Kindly inform them if they will not allow you to do the job they've entrusted you to do, i.e. discipline and staff the floor appropriately, you will no longer be available to be charge nurse.

I've always worked with managers that have stood by their charge nurses decisions (sometimes to a fault).

thank you for your feedback. First of all, I was relief charge nurse until the FT charge nurse quit due to disagreements with management. Lots changes are imposed with things not getting done right. This facility has had too many bosses and too many rules. There has been a frequent turnovers with nursing management too. I was invited by the ex Charge Nurse to quit with her but due to my loyalty to my colleagues, I decided to stay. I was asked to formally apply for Charge Nurse position. I've been a charge nurse on and off, been a travelling nurse and a Registry Nurse. Total of 11 years of experience. With regards to the situation concerning the write up; We needed a sitter, and 2 CNAs for that shift. A staff CNA was called to come in extra to sit in. Come change of shift, 3 CNAs showed up. There was a screwed with staffing again. Staffing person missed writing down the extra CNA. I had to cancel or send home somebody. Admin on call was called. The instruction was to cancel or send home the overtime staff. Well the sitter coming in was already overtime and the other staff that wasn't on the schedule was also on overtime due the fact that we have a 7 shift contract/pay period. So, I decided to cancel the sitter first, but he said "No!" that he was on his way in, that he had an agreement with nursin admin regarding his hours. He should have been cited for insubordination. I called the main admin and she agreed to send home the prn CNA.

The employee of the month was given to me and I was the last person to know that I got the award. Apparently they go around and ask staff to vote for such. Plus I got a letter from a patient about going abov e and beyond my duty in caring for him. That same month, I was called in the office for the write up and at the same time given a certificate for employee of the month! There were 3 people in that meeting including myself. The director, nurse manager and HR.

Thanks, I have informed them that if they feel I an not worthy of the job, then I'd be more than willing to step down and work the floor. No big deal. Yet they said, " Oh no, you are doing great! The team likes working with you."

Well, maybe I shouldn't toss in my two cents here, but this place sounds too messed up to be a good place to work.

All the changing rules, high turnover, including management. Being told everyone likes you and making you employee of the month, then refusing to stand behind your 'charge nurse' decisions, and citing you for insubordination and putting you on 60 days probation. For what? Rumors and hearsay? And yet now they say you are doing a great job.

If it were me, I'd find another job. Sounds to me like there are too many chiefs and none of them know what they're doing. Way too unstable working conditions.

still not clear on what policy you violated. also, what is the difference between sitter and cna. as i have been in management, from that standpoint, the person who would have cost the dept. the most money should have gone home . as to the comment from the person who had a special agreement re his/her hours....says who? how did you verify that?

in places i have worked a sitter and cna are a little different. a sitter has specialized training in working with patients that need 1 on 1 care, i.e., ams,

pt's who might hurt themselves etc. not knowing all the circumstances, i close in saying if you feel you have been singled out, you probably have. the reason i anm not in management now is because i found that nsg administrators (as well as some hr personnel) can be very biased in their disciplinary actions. perhaps you should follow the lead of the ex charge nurse you spoke of and go elsewhere. nursing is too diversified a field with too many opportunities to stay where youare not wanted. sadly, nursing can be a cutthroat field. by the way...if the hr person was not the hr director, go above his/her head in hr. that person may not hasve been on the up and up either.

thanks for comments. Our CNA are licensed. The sitter we needed was a licensed CNA. All the CNAs working that night night were already on overtime,except the prn CNA. The CNA who was insubordinate to me is a good one though, who gets the job done. While the prn CNA I sent home was lazy. It didn't cost the unit anymore money. Anyway, it just prove to me what kind of people I am dealing with in this organization. I have 3 offers that I am dwelling on right now. In a matter of days, I'd be making the decision on who to work with. I'd be away from the hellhole finally and with me come my staff that supports me. Hoorah!

In my facility, the charge nurses are not allowed to discipline, promote, hire or fire. Nursing Service decides who works and who stays home during a low census.If too many aides show up for work, Nursing Service asks for volunteers to go home, usually we have no problems with someone wanting to go home. One aspect and responsibility of RN's is to delegate tasks to CNA's; is it possible that the "lazy" CNA is not well-directed through her (his) shift? If, in fact, the CNA in question is unable to perform his or her duties after being advised by RN, maybe your manager needs to be informed.

i know a cna who worked for prn who was doing a one on one for a resident and there this r.n. who was the regualar staff that could care less about the agency workers. anyway this r.n. caught this cna falling asleep instead of asking that person if she needed a break,or did she have her break yet, needed get some fresh air,coffee or water. the r.n. decided to run to the charge nurse and got the cna fired from the prn. and this r.n. did made employee of the month. i feel as thro i know this story.

im sure they did accept your decisions.why do you think they've gotten fired.

but if that was me see a co-worker sleeping the first thing i would have done is ask. have you had a break? do you need some coffee or water or maybe need to walk around. not any of this stop drop go run to charge nurse or supervisior.
