Nursing Informatics

Specialties Informatics

I've been looking at taking my education to the next level. Before becoming a nurse I was pursuing a job in computer science and hardware and have always been invested in computer information.

Since starting as a nurse I've noticed the HUGE gap in information technology. Not only from hospital to hospital but even WITHIN each hospital between floors or even just between hospitalists on the same floor.

I was just wondering if there were any Informaticists on here that could give a nurse a glimpse into this field. It looks interesting to me, but the reason I left computer science in the first place was because the job market sucked.

Anyway if there are any of you out there give up the goods!

I moved your post to the Nursing Informatics forum to encourage maximum responses. :)

Guess if I had taken 2 more seconds to scroll down I would have seen this in the specialists >

Specializes in orthopedic/trauma, Informatics, diabetes.

I have very little computer background but an affinity for them. I too am frustrated by the shortcomings of the EHRs and started working with the EPIC people at work. As an older new nurse, I was intrigued by the informatics discipline. I am told it is the up and coming specialty and there are many different aspects of it. I am in an MSN program and interested in creating careplans, staff education. I am starting some practicum work this summer working with ABSN students in a SIM lab to teach charting in real-time, charting per our policy (especially avoiding over charting)

I think that as a nurse with computer experience, you would be a great candidate. I missed a great research assistant opportunity because of my lack of computer experience, but got a great opportunity d/t my experience with EPIC. I am very excited about it!
