Hi, does anyone have a good recommendation for an online nursing informatics masters program? thanks

I did a search on this forum using the terms "nursing informatics masters" and came up with a TON of previous posts on this subject.

Look at the top of this forum, to the right of: "New Thread", click on "Search this section", type in your search terms and click: "Go"

Why dont you try it using terms: "Masters in Informatics", "MSN" "degree programs" "Nursing Informatics Masters degree" etc.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have been working as an RN for 2 months now. If I were to enter a MSN informatics program that takes 2 years... would that be enough experience to transition to an Informatics position? Thanks againg. Jerry

Speaking as a former hiring manager, an experienced RN of 25 years and one who has practiced in this specialty for 15+ years - School work does not give one "experience".

An advanced degree (in any specialty) is not equal to practice "experience".

After finishing your undergrad nursing program did you have "enough experience" to transition into an independent practicing RN? No, that education gave you the educational foundation to begin your practice. You still had a preceptor or were put "on probation", supervised and considered "a new grad." You were not (I hope) allowed to walk into an ICU (or any unit) and practice independently, correct?

I do think that combined with your clinical nursing practice of 2 years and the foundational specialty knowledge your MSN in informatics will give you, you should be able to secure an entry level position in informatics.

Hi, You are correct. I am working at a psych hospital currently and am applying to other hospitals to gain some med/surg exp. as far as nursing informatics goes... i was originally interested in becoming an NP in acute or family care; however, i feel that the nursing informatics may be a much needed speciality in the future especially with more and more technology in healthcare. do you think that i am on the right track? thanks!

You know, in the current environment and with the push towards Meaningful Use and ARRA you could probably get an entry level job in informatics today......... but would you be viewed by experienced clinicians as credible? Considering you have no actual clinical practice/working experience. You also have no actual informatics experience and that learning curve can be EXTREMLY steep. You very likely could find an organization or company that is willing to take you on with these deficits and allow you to get your foot in the door. The money is good, the hours can be extremely long and there can be a great deal of stress - stress the likes of with you have no experience............you could obtain loads of on- the- job experience and possible continue your advance degree while working or continue with your original plan of getting your clinical nursing foundation experience while also pursuing your degree..................but these are all ifs. Its your decision.

Based on your nursing expertise... is nursing informatics a more stable career choice for the future over a family nurse practitioner... I am a little worried of the FNP due to possible health care changes as well as the proposed 2015 in which a DNP would be required for advanced nurse practice... I know that I am still very young in my RN career (2 months to be exact), but what speciality would you recommend overall? I really appreciate your help. Thanks! Jerry

My personal opinion is that both are excellent career choices. "Stability" in today's world is anyone's guess....look at the housing market......

I picked nursing as my profession and career because I thought I would enjoy doing it for the rest of my life and because I'd always have a job and be able to make a living (I think that’s the stability component you are looking for???).

I've been blessed that I made the right decision 25 years ago and even more blessed that each specialty that I have chosen within nursing (first Oncology, then Home Health/IV-Hi Tech, then Informatics) has provided me with continual rewards personally, professionally and economically.

Long story short - choose the specialty that you feel you will love doing; the one that you feel will be the most rewarding for you.

I have some friends in the healthcare IT recruiting business, and according to them, things right now are looking a lot better than last year and they have told me that the demand at the moment exceeds the supply of qualified candidates. Now, nobody has a crystal ball to say what profession looks safe, but as informaticsrn mentioned, choose what you think you will enjoy the most.

Also, is your facility already using an EMR? Do they have current projects being implemented? Can you volunteer to be a super user? That could get you some experience which might come in handy later on.

On second thought, there are many universities like Kaplan, Walden and U. of Phoenix offering distance education for their MSN in IT.
