Nursing Informatic vs Mature Student

Published

Bonjour

I'm a French guy living in Montréal since only few weeks

I dream to do Nursing studies

and to use my background : Economics and Computing studies + work experiences in these fields.

My worries:

- do I m too old to start a new career in Nursing? I'm 43

- does my English is good enough?

- does Nursing Informatics has a future?

- In France, the professional world don't like people that change their career....what about Canada???

- where I should apply?

I'm stressed but excited

thanks for your advices

A francophone living in Quebec doesn't have to worry about how good their English is. You have to be able to function in French to work there.

You aren't too old. You may find the nursing school mentality something that you don't want to or can't deal with. Most like to have students that can think the way the programme wants them to.

Computers to nursing isn't that unusual. You just have to make sure you are good with people and view them as people and not objects. I've worked with several nurses who couldn't find work in the IT world and went back to school for nursing.

1) no you're not too old.Go for it.

2) You are a little rusty ( you should say "is my English good enough?") but you should be fine.

3)I really don't know.

4) It is increasingly common for people to change careers in Canada. It think you will find you are not the only mature student in your class. I was 38 when I went and the oldest in my class was 52. Most of the class was in their 40s.

5) You will need to research nursing programs in the area that you want to go to school.Generally programs will have prerequisites that you will have to complete before you can apply to the nursing program.

If your goal is to work in health informatics and you have previous education and work experience in IT, you can take a health informatics certificate program there is no need to take a nursing program. Most of the IT support staff in healthcare do not have a nursing background, they have an IT background.

Ryerson university offers an online health informatics program
