Thanks for clearing that up devshop. I have forgotten that the scope of practice for registered nurses according to the Philippine Nursing Law does not include IV therapy. I'm surprised they have not changed that. I was also going by my experience at the Philippine General Hospital. We were allowed to insert IV's, give IV meds, and run blood transfusions there. In fact we (nurses) were way better than the residents and medicine interns when it came to inserting IV's in that hospital.

What Suzanne was saying, however, is that these IV training seminars are not necessary if you plan on working in the US because the hospitals here will provide the opportunity to learn it as part of orientation.

But I have a question to ANSAP or anyone who care to answer: If nurses there need to be trained in IV therapy because it's not part of their scope of practice, why do hospitals require this certification prior to being hired?

I guess, I really know the answer to that question. You just have to accept things as they are without question. It is what it is -- the US is not the same as the Philippines.

hi rnhawaii! i am just wondering about your comment. i have worked in many hospitals with an iv team but for the most part, the staff rn's still insert their iv caths and start the infusion. the iv team is only called when the rn is having difficulty with the insertion or if it is a picc line the patient needs. is it different there in hawaii?

i still don't advocate for nurses to go through those iv training sessions in the philippines though. iv insertion is very simple to do and just requires practice to get better at. by the way, what does ansap stand for?

hi pinoynp! happy holidays!

well, i used to work in a large hospital in honolulu, soon to be magnet hospital ( well, they're working on it). since i started there in '98, they have an iv therapist 24/7 who does insert iv's, do dressing change for picc lines, do restarts and other iv related stuff. our nursing staff do not insert ivs at all. i heard that in other hospitals here in hawaii have the same policy as well. we have a lot of filipino nurses who works as an iv therapist( and some who are still working on their nclexrn are already contemplating to work as an iv therapist!!! its not like its a bad thing but....oh, well nuff said), i know someone working as an ivt for 3 years now who actually had to fly out to the mainland us to be certified to insert picc lines, to me that was cool, plus i am sure they get paid more than a regular iv therapist. yeah, in the philippines, nurses are not allowed to insert ivs..i know it was allowed in the past. if the nurses there are trying to get an iv insertion seminars, i guess thats for own gain, and if they choose to work in the hospital in the philippines, i guess that's fine ( even if its costly), but i don't suggest for a nurse to go to expensive seminars if they plan to work in the us at all.:holly1: :holly2: :icon_redface:

Hi! I'm very much interested in attending the training for IV therapy this February, but I could'nt find the contact numbers of ANSAP. Do you know where and how can I inquire about the IV training schedule? How much does it cost and for how long? Thanks.

ANSAP has a direct line which is 713-1063.

You can also try 716-3901 up to 20 loc.383

You can call them to ask about their next schedule and fees for IVT training. The basic training takes 3 days.

Hi! Where can we do the 6+6+2 requirement of ANSAP? I am not currently employed in any hospital thus I'm searching for hospitals that will allow me to affiliate for IV training compliance. Any suggestions?
