US citizen giving birth in Canada

World Canada

Published

Well, I lost my job and health insurance and I'm pregnant.

My husband says just go to Canada to have the baby, healthcare is free and the baby will be a dual citizen...we'll go rent a cabin for a couple of months...

Is it really that easy? If it won't be free, what could I expect it to cost? I know he gets crazy ideas in his head from time to time, but I'm starting to get a little worried.

The OP really needs to look into the rules for her state Medicaid program. In Texas you can have more than one car, they just have a limit on how much they are worth. My income limit was something like 4200/month (now that was with 4 other kids at home). Obtaining pregnancy Medicaid is a lot different than getting regular Medicaid or food stamps. Stop trying to run to other countries to get out of your problems. Investigate all your options here first.

Hmmm. Interesting thread. Interesting responses. Waiting to see what the outcome will be.

I say, just stay home, have the baby here in the US. Then, when the dust settles from the hospital bills and you're ready to go back to work, get a lawyer, declare bankruptcy and start over again.

Lots of people, lots of companies do this every single day, perfectly acceptable. Plus in a lot of states you get to keep your home and one or two cars.

I'm wondering if Motorcycle Mama is pulling our collective chain just a bit? :D

A hospital can't refuse to accept you as a patient - have the baby here and then set up a payment schedule with them. I also think there may be other financial options out there - maybe talk to someone from social services.

Good luck - :icon_hug:

I have a real problem with this suggestion. It's irresponsible people who pull these shennanigans who cause healthcare costs to rise for those of us who are responsible and pay our bills. My HMO costs over $16,000 per year for my family of 4 (the rest of my kids are on their own and paying their own way as I've taught them). On top of that I have copays: lets see, primary doctor $15, specialist $35, PT $35 max 20/year, urgent care $35, ER $75, inpatient $250, same day procedures $75 (including things like EGDs), scrips are $15, $35 & $50 and they pay nothing towards a few things like Nexium, the list goes on.. All of these copays have to be paid prior to services being rendered... We are fortunate that my husband's employer pays a pretty good chunk of our insurance but with all of my health issues, we have a lot of money going out in copays.

I stand on my opinion about working. The OP has yet to state a reason she cannot work. People work all the time with everything she has mentioned. I don't think any country or state should be strapped with the expenses of anyones irresponsibility

I also tend to agree with those posters who suggested adoption. The thought of anyone being willing to squat under a tree to give birth these days is appalling.

I admire all the people who managed to comment on this thread without personally attacking the OP. I've been sitting here trying to figure out how to phrase things and it's very hard!

I have to add my vote for adoption. If you are not willing to give your child up for adoption, then both you and your husband should look for work that includes health insurance. Actually, it sounds like you need health insurance even if you do give your child up for adoption.

Wow . . . , I wish I could comment on this thread without attacking anyone, but as a fellow preggo nurse, I think my hormones would get me into a lot of trouble on this one. Just . . . wow. . .

THses are just some quotes from Motorcycle Mama.

"Why should and does the government pay for about 80% of the crap they pay for and to support people (illegals, foreign countries) and causes that are the true waste of tax dollars.

Didn't these old people who were once working members of society help fund the government (who shouldn't be expected to take care of them now that they can't contribute tax dollars like they once did?)

Why should the working class of society not be able to comfortably afford medical care without taking a vow of poverty? Why are the deadbeats of society who never worked or paid taxes "entitled" to the same "quality" of care the working class - who not only paid their dues in taxes but now must have what they worked their whole lives for, sucked away?

Yes, people who can afford it should pay, but why can't the middle class afford it without being takent to the cleaners?"

"I'm pregnant and my husband has this big idea that I should have the baby in Italy (his mother country). He thinks this will make the baby a dual citizen."

(Canada wasn't the first chouce.."

"the insurance is a JOKE, such a joke that I dropped mine, even though it is free (ha ha) for myself."

This was from a post in November. So She already knew she was pregnant.

"I have several horses "

As much as we love our pets and horses (myself included) If finances are dire these are a luxury

"(I also ride a Harley Sportster)."

I also saw mention of owning 40 acres of land free and clear. Would it be a consideration to sell even part of it to alleviate some of you financial problems?
