I asked abou Ontario. I keep hearing what shambles the nursing homes are in organization and care wise. We face the same issues here in the US with stiffer penalties of course.

Where are you hearing this? I hear far more about the state of American nursing homes than Canadian one. Especially from the lawyers who advertise on TV about law suits.

Any LTC facility I have ever been in has provided excellent care. Why would you think we don't take this stuff seriously and assume the penalties in the US are stiffer?

Because America is better?

Honestly this is a dead thread that came to life for some reason. Whatever happened to OttawaRPN, I miss that poster!

Read he posts about ontario nursing homes. I am reading how dreadful they are. I even saw a broadcast about adults with mental illness being placed in a nursing home when they should be in other facilities. Of course they were placed there because no one knew where else to put them. One individual ended up fatally injuring a an elder.

Penalties in the US are stiffer. We have an actual nursing board that deals with terminations and will place your name on a probation list. Ontario does not do this. We have a so called narc police that will come and question and accuse every one on the floor if gross negligence takes place. In addition to this we have tons of dos and don't regarding unavailable meds, procedures for ordering narcs (they can no longer be refilled), and have to page the MD for things most deem as minor. Different system.

Sonce when does the CNO not take ir license for errors.. They have done it before and will comtinie to do so. First step is for you emplouer to deal with you but then CNO will get involved if need be and take ur license or put restrictions on u... Why would i think we dont have dos and donts on meds etc... It seems like ur assuming based on ppl's threads.. No matter what there are good places to work and bad.. Ltc gets a bad wrap but i have worked at a few and trust me the ones who need not be nursing dont nurse very long... We always have to page the md with something minor but most places have nursing guidelines/standing orders for routine stuff u dont have to page the md.. I am curius but what experience do i have? Ltc?acute?

There are mentally challenged ppl all over in nursing homes.. The mental health issues down there are just as bad as in canada.. My mom has worked for over 20yrs mental health in the usa.. Mental health is and will continue to be neglected by healthcarew because u cant see it until a bunch of kids shot up

Why on earth do you think we don't have any rules up here? We have a college of nurses that is our version of a "board". We have rules surrounding meds as well. You seem to think that it is a free for all up here and we have no regulations. I wonder who you have been listening to.

Unless and until you have worked in more than a few Canadian facilities Katherine, you shouldn't be making any assumptions about our health care system. Canada has policies and standards governing the use of narcotics just as the US does. I'm not sure where you are getting your information.

WAT. There are actual nursing boards there? Does this mean those people we're paying our professional fees to are just pretending??? Man. I feel so used.
