Ontario Nursing..should I or shouldn't I

hi all

Little about myself. I'm a mother of 2 and due anytime with my third. I have always wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse and possibly work in the nicu. when our first 2 childeren were very young I took the personal support worker course and have worked in a long term care home for 5 years.. I do enjoy this work but seem to always feel like I want to do more.

what I'm struggling with is if I would be able to handle the 4 year nursing program. I know it's a challenging course. 4 years seems like a long time and what if I can't handle it.

I'm also from ontario . anyone out there taken the program and can give me some insight. what's it really like. any pointers. is there many jobs out there. I really want to get my dream job but I often think maybe it's to much right now and I should just stay where I am.

If your dream is nursing then why not follow it! You successfully worked as q PSW for 5 years so that's a good start. Do you have the appropriate pre reqs from high school ? If not you will need to look at alternative ways of gain these credit (ie. Adult learning of some sort). Or potentially look into a pre health program at a college and then apply to nursing programs.

Although it's great to start planning this now, if it's workable for your family and you are interested in staying home with your new Bub then definitely do that first. They are only babies once and it would be difficult (not impossible) to start nursing school with baby

I know when I was studying nursing, there were quite a few mothers and fathers in my year. It is challenging, but not impossible. In addition to what was stated, make sure you have the support of your friends/family as balancing all the different demands may require some flexibility.

It will ALWAYS be too much. There will never be a perfect time to do it.

I went for the 4 year degree when my children were 9 & 10, commuting 1 hr to classes and working part-time. It can be done. It was a bit nuts but once I had started, I decided there was no turning back. Don't let the doubt keep you from trying!

Former student nurse mom here. I did a year of pre-health because I had zero science background in highschool.

Hi i'm a single mother of a 5 year old and have always wanted to go for my RN.. I could've started years ago but i've always been debating or taking other programs when RN was what i've wanted since I was a child. Maybe apply and take some time to think and mentally prepare take some courses part-time such as electives to get started and it will take off the workload once you are in the RN program.

I am going to be starting the program at 28 so anything is possible :) if you have any friends or family that can help out with the kids during the program is a bonus as well.

In 2015 I started my Practical Nursing program with 2 kids (5 and 7 yrs old) at the age of 36. I graduated with honours - I mention this not to brag, but to say that because I was sacrificing so much of my kids time, I knew what was at stake and worked really hard for it. My kids are so proud of me for my accomplishments and they each picked out a scrub top for me to wear to my new job at my local hospital.

i decided against doing the 4 years at that time because I didn't want to be tied up in school for so long while my kids were young, but I did want to get the show on the road! I will consider bridging to RN in the future when the kids can fend for themselves a bit more.

Are you happy you went into nursing? I am starting RN in September but also applied for RPN so I have that option also.. I feel guilty because I was an ultrasound student but i've always been drawn to nursing even tho it looks like such a hard job.

Yes, very happy so far! I'm 6 shifts into my orientation at my new job and enjoying it. I'm still nervous but I've got another 10 or so shifts of orientation left before I'm on my own and I am looking forward to it!
