English job outlook in Montreal

World Canada

Published

Hey folks!

I am a new Manitoba RNBN hoping to move to Montreal. Wondering if anyone has any insight to getting a job with limited French. I am currently working on my French but cannot label myself as bilingual which seems to be a requirement on all job postings. I would ideally like a job in a hospital. I've only been a nurse for 6 months but work surgery and at community clinic. Thanks for any feedback :)

Specializes in Gerontology.

I am pretty sure you need to be not only bilingual to work in Quebec, but you also have know all the medical terms in French.

I think there is an actual French language exam you have to,pass before you can be licensed to work.

Best bet would be to contact the Quebec board of nursing for the qualifications needed.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

I currently live in Montreal and you need to pass a French exam to be licensed in Quebec.

Indeed, you would need to pass the French exam given by the OQLF in order to get your unrestricted RN license. You are eligible to work as a CEPI until you pass the exam, but you will earn less then as a full RN. Certain hospitals in Montreal cater more to the English community: the Jewish General, St Mary's, all of the MUHC...

That being said, despite them being «*english*» institutions, you must still be able to communicate in French. It will be tough, but not impossible; where there's a will, there's a way. Why motivates to live in Montreal?
