language blooper

  1. In our town there are a number of patients who speak only Spanish. A lot of nurses I work with speak a little Spanish - very little. I have a marginal hold on the language so I was conversing with one of my patients one day at the end of my shift. The oncoming nurse happened to step into the room and before I could introduce her, she stated her name and said " soy su enferma". My poor patient looked at me and we both started laughing. The proper word for nurse is "enfermera". She had announced she was his illness!
