I'm currently working on my pre reqs for nursing and I want to get a job in a nursing home before i start the program. I stopped by a local nursing home and was apalled by what i saw, so I ruled that one out. I did get recommendations to another one near by from some of my moms nursing friends, who are excited as everything I'm going in to nursing, but my question is, how do i go about getting the job. I dont have my cna and have absolutely no experience in any health care setting. I really want to have the experience before i start my clinicals so i have an idea of whats going on. Will they hire someone that doesnt have a cna and if not how do i go about getting one. Ive looked at programs in the schools around me and none offer such programs. My moms nursing friend told me to go in and be enthusiastic. I can do that but who do i talk to and how do i go about an interview if im given one on the spot. Please help me and i appreciate your advice.

Many nursing homes have their own CNA classes...they will provide them free, and in some cases pay for state testing, for you to agree to work there.
I'd call the nursing homes you are interested in, ask to take a tour and meet with the DON .
We NEED more people who WANT to work in LTC!!
