nursing home to hospital

Hi everyone! :)

I'm new to this site and I am in need of your input/advise. I'm a graduate of BSN and an RN here in NJ. Got my license April of last year and had been working in a Nursing Home Sub-Acute Unit. I still have 2 more years with them since I'm under contract. Thing now is that I'm a new mom and I asked for a change in my days off since nobody can look after the baby when my husband goes to work. He has two jobs and gave up one already. Can't afford a sitter for now either but they won't grant my request stating they are having problems with staffing sched especially on the weekends. If I always call out in those 2 days that my husband has to work, worst case scenario is that they are gonna fire me out. It's not stated in my contract though that I have to give up my green card if and when my employment ends. I really don't know what to do..My insurance is with them but when push comes to shove, I can buy out the contract. I just need a fall back coz we are financially challenged with all honesty. We've been here in this country for 3 yearys barely and with no relatives to help us out. Now,I'm planning to apply in a hospital but I don't know yet which area I would choose.I have no experience other than that in a nursing home because I didn't practice nursing since I graduated from College year '96. Any suggestions? Help!!!

Let me see if I understand this correctly, you are so financially strapped that you can't afford a sitter, but you can afford to buy out your contract and lose your job? Not to mention, if you get fired by calling off, that ca't look good to a new employer in a tight economy, so who knows when you could find another job, particularly one where you would not have to work weekends.

I think I'd be doing what I can to find a sitter, but maybe I don't understand your situation completely.

Find a baby sitter. Most of us have been through child care headaches and we manage just fine with whatever resources we have. You need to try harder, get off that "haven't been in this country very long, no family members handy, regularly calling in when my husband can't babysit" schtick because you won't find any sympathy for that here. You're a new nurse under contract for what sounds like a good job, yet you're behaving like an entitled child. When my daughter was born, I lived far away from my family and had no in-laws. My husband worked full time. When I went back to work, I found sitters by inquiring of friends, neighbors and coworkers. My administrator's secretary turned me on to the best baby sitter my daughter ever had.

Among health care facilities, word travels fast. Disgruntled employers talk about problem employees, and with your call in record, you are one. Keep it up and you will be fired, you will not be able to find another job and you will be screwed.

Proudnurse brings up a good point - it never looks good to try and get fired. Sometimes breaking a contract will have far worse outcome like making you pay back financially. If you are really strapped financially, check out Govt Asst, Food Assistance and Title 20 child care assistance. There are sometimes plenty of neighbors that would watch your child for a low cost or barter for other service like cleaning their home, laundry or etc. Also, you can try "Angelfood" ministries which help with low cost food bundles each month for a low cost. Have you talked to your coworkers? Maybe one would rather do weekends and will switch with you. Where there is a will there is a way and then look for a more desireable job with hours that work better for you. Good luck!

It might bring some perspective to read some more threads here. There are many, many nurses who would quite happily have your job. Finding another position after being terminated might be more than a challenge - it might be impossible.

Not to mention you have no hospital experience. Nursing home to hospital will be a big change. You will have to get an employer who will offer you more than a 2 week orientation.

Sounds like you feel that you are backed into a corner but you need to get out there and use all resources. Don't simply call in 2 days out of every week until you get fired! Do you belong to a church? If you don't there are many organizations that offer assitance/services. Get out there and network to find a good babysitter.

Good luck
