This seems to be a national problem. In Michigan, if a graduate nurse did not have an externship during nursing school, he/she will not have a job upon graduation. Even older, experienced nurses are not even getting interviews without specialized certification and experience in the job they are interested in. Specialization and certification appear to be requirements everywhere today.

The nursing profession/management/hospitals have done an excellent job of overstating the demand for and saturating the market with nurses, Thus are in the enviable position of dictating the work environment for nurses.

I hope that I am wrong, but with the proliferation of nursing schools popping up everywhere churning out thousands of new nurses a year, nursing may never regain it's status as an in demand profession. I can see the same thing happening to NP'S. There seems to be a new NP program opening up every 20 minutes............

Wouldn't be surprised if nursing salaries decrease of become stagnant over the next decade or so.

So true. A colleague of mine has finished her first year of training for FNP and is considering dropping. In the year she has attended, not a single posting for a FNP has come through placement at the University. It has been hyped that there will be a shortage of providers with the new Health Reform, but my fear is that it will be due to reimbursement issues, not lack of trained medical caregivers.

there is jobs out their it's just hospitals don't want to waste their limited funds on training someone. also let's face it, you need a bachelors in nursing now...

Actually, neither BA or ADN nurses are being considered at this time....

I am discovering that in the past 10 years the new minimum standard is an MSN degree.

I agree, the only one's getting hired, at this time, are the ones who have at least a couple of years of experience, and I think even they are having a tough time.. :confused:

This is a very unfortunate time to graduate as a new nurse, I hope the time comes when the older nurses retire, the f/t nurses become p/t, and the employers will be bangin' on our doors and we will once again resume our rightful place of power :devil:

As for the girl who graduated with honors, it hasn't even been a week yet. She'll have a job before summer's over.

Good article, I just feel it's way too soon for them to be worried about not yet having found work.

Believe me, even those of us who are employed have it not so good. I realize we do have a job, and I am thankful for it, but I can't transfer off my unit, can't find anything part time, and I apply and apply for jobs outside of the hospital,and at other hospitals, and I don't even get a call. It's like we're stuck FOREVER on whatever unit we're on -- and the management can also just hang it all over your head and tell you how lucky you are to have a job, so just suck-it-up-and take it, sort of attitude and atmosphere. Not a fun position to be in really.

Sounds like an education bubble. You have all these colleges pumping and dumping students out for professions for where there isn't work for anymore. I declined taking a rad-tech program because of the meager employment prospects, and am currently awaiting to enter nursing school for this Fall. We are in a recession/depression so it's not uncommon for employment to slow down. When teachers and police are being cutback in many states, it shouldn't be surprising that healthcare will also cutback or slowdown as well.

The good/bad news is that you will want to be in the healthcare profession, cause as the economy gets worse, politicians have a habit of creating more wars to fight. So you might be working just like in M.A.S.H. somewhere in South Korea or perhaps somewhere in the M.E. etc. Also if we end up resorting to bartering for when the dollar becomes worthless, first aid skills are always handy.

I thought it was just something we were experiencing regionally. In 25 years I have NEVER seen a condition in which I have sent out resumes that have not even been acknowledged let alone not received an interview. I have applied to positions where my resume matches almost exactly the job description; and "poof", I hit send, off to cyberspace as if the resume was a figment of my imagination. It's definitely foreign ground for me, a person used to sending a resume, having an interview, and deciding whether to accept the job offer.
