I agree. I'm Independent, so I don't have an agenda for either side. However, at this rate, I'm very worried about the USA. We are really doing poorly and I am not even sure if most people realize how bad this is.

I don't think it has to do with people NOT KNOWING. Some are all riled up. Others are...playing 'eyesies/closies', right now.:D

Can't even blame them. These days, I have to fight the urge to bury my head in a mound of sand. I can only tolerate so much of politics until I go on one of my 'political holidays'.

Everytime I turn on the tv, it's something! I haven't even been paying attention to the this BP crap, because I know it's just gonna p*ss me off.:D

Ever the optimist, I believe this country can pull through it. We've been through several depressions...and let's not forget how screwed up the economy was in the 70's (and the mid-late 80's...).

Anyway, this is depressing news. Peopel are questioning the decision to go into nursing. Uh, I don't think there's anywhere else to go. :D

The safest areas are mainly:

1. Healthcare

2. Business(Not a 'general' degree. I'm talking about specialized concentrations like accounting, ANYTHING MATH RELATED, i.e., actuarial science, etc...)

Grads across the board are having problems, right now. Recruiting is down. Starting salaries are lower.

So, I'm staying where I am -> NURSING. I was a 4th year accounting student in a 5 year program. I switched to nursing and a nurse I will be.

I am so NOT switching majors again, people. I'm tired of school. :D

So, here's the plan at this moment --> I'm going to *try* to get on in the hospital as a CNA/PCT. Network. *Try* to get my BLS and ACLS certifications. Network. Relocate for nursing school and *try* to land an externship or the versant program, though I think it's the same. In the meantime, apply for PCT positions in new city at desired hospital (hopefully, they promote internally).

Hopefully, I'll get in there. If not -- and the nepotism fails me *wink*-- I guess I have to prepare myself to expand my jobsearch area.

I've been looking out of state. I live in Texas so I've been scouting hospitals in areas located near major cities like Houston, i.e., Sugarland, Baytown and Missouri City, Galveston, etc...

I can do 'rural' but it has to be w/in 15-20miles of a bustling major city.

...and there's gotta be a WalMart...

The nursing shortage myth is also perpetuated by schools. In my state several "for profit" 2 year degree programs have started RN programs that I feel (opinion here, not fact) take in as many students as possible and grind em out in two years with degrees from non-nln accredited programs. One school is having trouble maintaining the minimum nclex pass rate for first time takers which brings me back to the level of the schools ie get em in, take their cash, spit em out. The big promotion for these schools seems to be "Come on in, become a nurse, always have a job, be hired instantly, make big money, and live happily ever after".

I graduate this year and it still turns my stomache when a school official tells me not to worry about the job market, because I'll be an RN :barf01:

I can understand this. But don't stick your head so far in that you don't educate yourself on candidates and then when it comes time to vote, VOTE. And watch these politicians -- there are folks on both sides of the aisle who would sell this country out in a heartbeat if it meant they get to stay in office for one more term. The special interest pandering needs to STOP if we are to survive.

And please don't feel that we Republicans necessarily want every R. to win. We are against the RINOS -- Republicans in Name Only who go along to get along. Many of us just want conservatives -- true conservatives, not "neo-cons" to gain control again.

I feel many young people get swayed by the liberal message. I was alot more liberal also when I was younger. Those of us who are more conservative are usually older and have been around the block a few times. We've seen our country pull out of bad times like these, and it was only through one way: solid conservative fiscal policy. Carter years were a lot like this -- and then Reagan came along.

I don't agree w/ everything Reagan did, but he absolutely ushered in the most prosperous time in American history. I am hoping that we elect leaders this time who will implement this type of approach. Creating more welfare, more entitlements, and more wars we can't afford is not the way to go.

Ok, I will stop w/ my rants. I know it's likely ******* someone off on here. But I can't help it. :p I feel it needs to be said.

Good discussion nurses. Now the question is, how do we as nurses wrestle the control back? It's all about control of our profession, and right now the goal in my opinion is to identify fact from fiction. There is not a nursing shortage, but there will be when it is learned that the reimbursement from the new HC bill is so low that the hospitals and other health care providers can not afford to stay in business. This administration is not a friend to business, so therefore the next stage would be that "for profit" health care is gone; those whom have chosen health care as their profession will be leaving practice, to be replaced by people who will do it at a fraction of the pay we currently enjoy. And pay is "good"--I like to be able to feed my family.I don't do this as volunteer work, though I do volunteer AT MY CHOICE. So we nurses need to understand that our profession is under siege; we will be replaced by people who agree to accept work at very little reimbursement--just look at overseas health care and unfortunately, you can predict where this is going.

Exactly, KLOCL -- and this is exactly why I'm getting my advanced degree. I honestly feel there is no real future in nursing. Now, if it turns out to be different, great. I will still have my degree. But I do fear that what you're saying is true about nurses -- they're darn tired of paying us well. It costs them, and so they are searching to "outsource" is by importing in foreign nurses for less.

Again, time to vote in politicians who stand for Americans. Not the unions, not the special interests, and not for the lobbyists.

I just graduated May 2010. I graduated with honors. I have a BS Biology. I have CNA experience. I have my ACLS certification. I have applied to 99 jobs since Dec 09 mostly in southeast, but all over US also. I have yet to even get an interview. I sacrificed so much to complete nursing school including having to reduce my pay, moving back home, and being treated unfairly by the nursing instructors and now that the hardest part is over...I'm still having to wait for a job. I feel like I am..stuck. I can't relocate, I can't buy a house, but I HAVE GOTTA move out of my parents' house, but I don't want to waste money renting esp considering my job status. It is very discouraging. But I still have faith that the Lord will open a door for me. I read in a nursing career book that statistics show that majority of nurses get jobs through one of either 3 ways: the place where they performed their clinicals hire them; the place where they currently are employed hires them; or through word of mouth. It says that very few nurses are actually hired by blindly submitting resumes and applications. I will continue to "blindly" submit my application/resume, I will apply to institutions that are not my preference and I will continue to wait on the Lord. When no job appears I guess I'll continue to work part-time and go ahead and pursue my online BSN degree. I want kids, but I have to put that off also. Thanks everyone for allowing me to vent.

I know it doesn't apply that there is "strength in numbers" when it comes to the number of nurses nationwide that have sent out hundreds of resumes that go unacknowledged. I think it's the new computer-age. Resumes sent online are never read by a human being; a computer resume reading program is used, and the resume that has the correct formatting and words the program is looking for might get flagged. This is probably happening off-site. The ONLY interviews I have gotten in the past year (and I have 25 years of experience) are from the resumes I have sent by mail (a rare thing these days) or by fax. Still, while I am fortunate to be employed, I would like more hours and have had no luck in the past 2 years of finding more work. It was unheard of for a nurse to say "I am fortunate to be employed". Try to find someone that you can HAND your resume to by staying active in the community and volunteer work.

This seems to be a repeat of the tech boom back in the 1990's. There were advertisments on TV and radio for computer schools all the time because of the demand for tech workers. Now people with master degrees and lots of certifications are having trouble getting jobs in the technology field. Fast forward to today and all I hear is nursing schools on the radio and tv describing the demand for nurses. These schools are just going to create an oversupply of nurses just like the did with the tech grads. At least nursing can't be outsourced, but I kinda worry nursing employers will have the idea of importing cheaper workers thru h1b visas like the tech companies are doing.

Thanks for the advice. I will take it. I guess I was unaware of this b/c the hospitals' online applications have user log-in accounts where you can check your application status in which several have actually said that I was "being considered by hiring manager" or "under process review" which was a step beyond "application received". So it seemed that some HR person was responding and updating my application, but I just never got the job. In which case it reads "application not under further review" or "Sorry, not selected". So disappointing.:crying2:

Anyone who's read any of my posts knows of my disdain for recruiters as well as computer applications. Recruiters and computers don't hire, managers do. I'd advise any new grad to go up to unit you are applying and drop off your resume. Tell the manager you're wanting nights and you'd love nothing more than to work every weekend. Get a letter of recommendation from a former teacher if you can. And volunteer your time, at a charity clinic or something similar. You'll meet other nurses who can put in good word for you.

The nursing profession/management/hospitals have done an excellent job of overstating the demand for and saturating the market with nurses, Thus are in the enviable position of dictating the work environment for nurses.

I hope that I am wrong, but with the proliferation of nursing schools popping up everywhere churning out thousands of new nurses a year, nursing may never regain it's status as an in demand profession. I can see the same thing happening to NP'S. There seems to be a new NP program opening up every 20 minutes............

Wouldn't be surprised if nursing salaries decrease of become stagnant over the next decade or so.

I agree but you know what would make nurses in demand again? Raise the minimal education level to bsn and get rid of lpn programs.

This is the advice I have been giving my 4th year BSN students. It's what I did in the 80's! Working nights and weekends is something the older nurses don't want to do; it's hard for a nurse manager to tell an unwilling nurse she has to go back to nights when new graduates are on the floor asking for those jobs :nurse:
