I'm starting an online MSN program next week at Walden University with a specialization in Nursing Education. Any other online MSN-ers out there? What about Walden? Any others?

How is it going? I have looked into Walden twice over the past 5 years or so...I just can't make up my mind.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Just curious - how long does it take? Do you have the option of getting a clinical nurse specialist? I'm finishing the MSN online at University of Phoenix on June 6th. I'm considering doing a post-masters certificate to get the CNS. Congrats on getting started.

Specializes in psych/mental health.

Just finished my first semester at online. I'm in a mixed track; education and psych. Have you ever taken on line classes before? This one was my first. Different, but a good experience.

Good luck to you.

It's going well. I'm in my second class and it's not bad at all ... just different than class in real life. There's usually a dvd/video to watch then a reading assignment. After, then you have to post to a discussion thread online, but then you have to respond to at least two other student posts. All posts and responses have to meet specific criteria. Then there are papers to write in addition to class discussions.

I'm glad that I'm doing it and would be happy to answer any questions that you have.

Patty,

This was my first online class experience. You're exactly right ... It's very different, but I'm glad I'm doing it. We go through the program one class at a time for 24 months so I feel like I'm just slowly picking away at it. Good luck to you, as well ... CRNAsoon

I will be starting my MSN with a focus on Education at Walden University. Have you completed you degree (CRNAtobe) any insight on the program. I will be going to part-time at work so I can do the best I can put at least 20 hours per week into my school work.

Any tips would be helpful.

What is the cost of this program? I did my BSN from UOP and have 9 master level credits I have been sitting on for 2 years. I was told that getting my MSN in ed or just a generic MSn will probably not be very beneficial. I am 51 and am wondering if it is worth it.

I would have to question why an MSN woudn't be beneficial?? I have had several jobs NOT be available to me because I don't have my MSN(and they didn't care if it was in education or generic).

The 2 year MSN program will be less than $20,000 included books, etc.

Specializes in Hospital Education Coordinator.

I got my MSN in nursing education this way. Do not think for a moment that "online" means "less work". There is a lot of work to be done! I believe it to be a good option. HOWEVER, some course work requires clinical time. Unless you are getting your degree through a college/university in your home state, you might find it hard to get preceptors for your clinical time. You pay the school and the school expects you to locate a preceptor on your own, then expects the preceptor to work free (unless you agree to pay them too). We do not allow this in our facility as the preceptor and hospital have no contract with the school and there is too much liability. Don't know about Walden, sorry.

How did you decide on the online school that you chose? I want to get my MSN Education but I want a school that meets accredidation. So many are just diploma mills. I don't want to waste my time and effort (not to mention money).

Do the schools have to be nationally and regionally accredited? Most that I have researched only seem to be regionally accredited.
